4. Initial Setup
Once assembled, prepare the habitat for your tortoise.
- Placement: Choose a quiet, stable location away from direct drafts, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight.
- Substrate: Add appropriate substrate (e.g., coco fiber, cypress mulch) to the enclosure. Ensure sufficient depth for burrowing in the private area.
- Lighting and Heating: Install a suitable heat lamp and UV-B lamp (not included) on the lamp holder. Position them to create a basking spot with the correct temperature gradient for your tortoise species. Use a thermometer to monitor temperatures.
- Water and Food Dishes: Place shallow water and food dishes in accessible areas.
- Decorations: Add hides, rocks, and other decorations to enrich the environment and provide security for your tortoise.

5. Operating the Habitat
Daily use and interaction with your tortoise habitat.
- Feeding: Provide fresh food daily in the designated food dish.
- Water: Ensure fresh water is always available in the water dish.
- Monitoring: Observe your tortoise daily for any changes in behavior, appetite, or health. Check temperature and humidity levels regularly.
- Access: Use the openable top panels for easy access to your tortoise and for routine tasks. Securely latch them closed when not in use.

6. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for your tortoise's health.
- Daily Spot Cleaning: Remove any uneaten food and waste from the habitat daily.
- Tray Cleaning: The built-in pull-out tray allows for easy removal and cleaning of waste and soiled substrate. Clean the tray as needed, typically several times a week.
- Deep Cleaning: Periodically, remove all substrate and decorations for a thorough cleaning of the entire habitat. Use reptile-safe disinfectants.
- Wood Care: Wipe down wooden surfaces with a damp cloth. Avoid excessive moisture to prevent wood damage.
- Window Cleaning: Clean acrylic windows with a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner to maintain clarity.

7. Troubleshooting
Common issues and their solutions.
- Habitat feels wobbly: Ensure all screws are tightened during assembly. Check that the habitat is on a flat, stable surface.
- Difficulty opening/closing top panels: Check hinges for alignment and ensure no debris is obstructing the movement. Lubricate hinges if necessary.
- Inadequate heating/lighting: Verify that the heat lamp and UV-B lamp are working correctly and are of the appropriate wattage for your tortoise species and enclosure size. Adjust lamp height as needed.
- Tortoise not using hide: Ensure the hide is dark, secure, and large enough for your tortoise to comfortably enter and turn around. Check the temperature within the hide.
