Product Overview

The Tadeto Circuit Breaker Finder Kit consists of two primary components: the Transmitter (Outlet Tester) and the Receiver (Circuit Breaker Finder).

Transmitter (Outlet Tester)

This unit plugs into an electrical outlet and sends a signal through the circuit. It also functions as a GFCI outlet tester and displays real-time voltage and wiring conditions on its color LCD screen.

Receiver (Circuit Breaker Finder)

This handheld device detects the signal emitted by the Transmitter. It features a dual LCD screen to display signal strength and battery level, helping you accurately locate the corresponding circuit breaker in a panel.

Setup

1. Battery Installation (Receiver)

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the Receiver unit.
  2. Use the provided mini screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert 4 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

Note: The Transmitter (Outlet Tester) has a built-in battery for data retention during power outages and does not require user-installed batteries for its primary function.

2. Attaching Adapters (Transmitter)

The Transmitter can be used with various adapters for different testing scenarios. To attach an adapter, align it with the prongs of the Transmitter and firmly push it into place. Ensure a secure connection before use.

Operating Instructions

1. Using the Circuit Breaker Finder

  1. Step 1: Insert Transmitter
Plug the Transmitter (Outlet Tester) into the electrical outlet you wish to trace. Ensure the screen displays "CORRECT" or a valid voltage reading before proceeding. If an adapter is needed (e.g., for a light socket or bare wires), attach it securely to the Transmitter first.
  2. Tadeto Transmitter plugged into an outlet, displaying 'CORRECT'

Image: The Transmitter plugged into an outlet, showing a "CORRECT" wiring indication.

  3. Step 2: Enter "Learn" Mode
Go to your electrical service panel. Press the power/reset button on the Receiver to turn it on and enter "Learn" mode. Slowly scan all circuit breakers in the panel. The Receiver will emit an alert sound in "Learn" mode; this is normal. Keep the sensing head close to each breaker.
  4. Tadeto Receiver in 'Learn' mode scanning circuit breakers

Image: The Receiver being used to scan circuit breakers in "Learn" mode, showing the sensing head near the breakers.

  5. Step 3: Enter "Scan" Mode and Locate Breaker
Short press the power/reset button on the Receiver again to enter "Scan" mode. Slowly scan all circuit breakers. The screen will display a full signal and the signal light will turn red when the correct circuit breaker is identified. This indicates the breaker controlling the outlet where the Transmitter is plugged in.
  6. Tadeto Receiver in 'Scan' mode identifying the correct circuit breaker

Image: The Receiver in "Scan" mode, indicating a strong signal and red light when positioned over the correct circuit breaker.

2. Using the Outlet Tester (Transmitter)

The Transmitter can be used independently to test the wiring condition of an outlet and perform a GFCI test.

  • Wiring Condition Test: Plug the Transmitter directly into a standard 3-prong outlet. The color LCD screen will immediately display the voltage and the wiring status (e.g., "CORRECT", "OPEN HOT", "OPEN GROUND").
  • GFCI Test: For GFCI outlets, press the "TEST" button on the Transmitter. A correctly wired GFCI outlet should trip, cutting power to the outlet. If it does not trip, the GFCI function is faulty. Press the "RESET" button on the GFCI outlet to restore power after testing.

The Transmitter's built-in battery allows it to retain the last reading for 10 seconds after being unplugged, which is useful for checking outlets in hard-to-reach locations.

3. Using Adapters

  • Light Socket Adapter: Attach this adapter to the Transmitter to test circuits connected to light fixtures. Screw the adapter into a standard light bulb socket.
  • 3-2 Prong Grounding Adapter: Use this adapter to test older 2-prong outlets. Ensure the grounding wire from the adapter is properly connected to a known ground source for accurate results.
  • Alligator Clip Adapter: This adapter is designed for testing bare wires. Ensure the power to the wires is OFF before connecting the alligator clips. Once connected, power can be restored for testing.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in its provided storage bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Replacement (Receiver): When the battery indicator on the Receiver shows low power, replace the 4 AAA batteries following the instructions in the "Setup" section.
  • Transmitter Battery: The Transmitter's internal battery is not user-replaceable. If the data hold function or display becomes unreliable, the unit may need servicing or replacement.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Receiver does not turn on or has a dim display.Low or dead batteries in the Receiver.Replace the 4 AAA batteries in the Receiver.
Transmitter screen is blank or not displaying voltage. No power to the outlet; internal battery depleted.Ensure the outlet has power. If the internal battery for data hold is depleted, the unit may need replacement.
Receiver cannot find the correct breaker.
  • Transmitter not securely plugged in.
  • Not in "Scan" mode.
  • Scanning too quickly or too far from breakers.
  • Interference from other electrical devices.
  • Breaker type (e.g., narrow GE THQP) may affect detection.
  • Ensure Transmitter is firmly seated in the outlet.
  • Verify Receiver is in "Scan" mode (short press power button).
  • Scan slowly and keep the sensing head close to each breaker.
  • Minimize other electrical activity during scanning.
  • Try scanning from different angles or positions for difficult breakers.
Light socket adapter does not make contact.Adapter may be too short for some deep sockets.Ensure the adapter is fully screwed in. If it still doesn't make contact, try a different light socket or an alternative testing method if available.
GFCI test does not trip the breaker.Faulty GFCI outlet or incorrect wiring. If the GFCI outlet does not trip after pressing the test button, the GFCI mechanism is likely faulty and should be inspected by a qualified electrician.
