Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective use of your Kobalt 1/4-inch x 25-foot High Carbon Wire Hand Auger. Designed for clearing clogs in sinks, tubs, and showers with drains ranging from 1.25 inches to 2 inches in diameter, this tool features a durable design and an auto-feed mechanism for ease of use. Please read this manual thoroughly before operation and retain it for future reference.
Safety Information
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves, when operating the auger.
- Ensure the work area is well-lit and clear of obstructions.
- Do not use the auger in drains containing harsh chemicals, as this can damage the cable or cause dangerous reactions.
- Keep hands and loose clothing away from the rotating cable and drum.
- Never force the cable. If it encounters significant resistance, retract it slightly and try again, or consider alternative methods.
- When using with a power drill, ensure the drill is securely attached and set to a low speed. Always use a drill with a clutch to prevent injury if the cable binds.
- Disconnect the power drill before making any adjustments or performing maintenance.
- Store the auger in a dry, safe place, out of reach of children.

Setup
- Prepare the Work Area: Clear any standing water from the sink, tub, or shower. Place towels or a bucket under the drain opening to catch any debris or water that may come out.
- Access the Drain: Remove any drain covers, stoppers, or strainers to gain direct access to the drain opening.
- Inspect the Auger: Before each use, inspect the cable for any kinks, fraying, or damage. Ensure all parts of the auger are securely assembled.
Operating Instructions
Manual Operation
- Insert Cable: Loosen the quick-lock mechanism. Carefully feed the cable into the drain opening.
- Advance Cable: Push the cable into the drain until you feel resistance, indicating the clog. Tighten the quick-lock mechanism to secure the cable.
- Rotate and Push: While holding the handle firmly, rotate the drum clockwise using the grip handle. Simultaneously, gently push the auger forward to work the cable through the clog.
- Engage Auto-Feed: The auto-feed mechanism allows for hands-free cable feeding and retrieving. Engage it as needed to advance or retract the cable.
- Clear the Clog: Continue rotating and pushing until the clog is broken up or retrieved. You may need to retract the cable, clean off debris, and reinsert it multiple times.
- Retract Cable: Once the clog is cleared, loosen the quick-lock mechanism and use the auto-feed or manually pull the cable back into the drum.
- Flush Drain: Run hot water down the drain for several minutes to flush away any remaining debris.

Power Drill Operation (Drill not included)
For increased power and efficiency, the auger can be attached to a power drill.
- Attach Drill: Ensure the power drill is unplugged or has its battery removed. Insert the auger's drill attachment shaft into the chuck of your power drill and tighten securely.
- Prepare for Use: Follow steps 1 and 2 from the Manual Operation section to insert and advance the cable to the clog.
- Operate Drill: Set the drill to a low speed and engage the trigger. Gently push the auger forward while the drill rotates the cable. The auto-feed mechanism can still be used.
- Clear and Retract: Continue until the clog is cleared. Disengage the drill, then retract the cable using the auto-feed or manually.
- Flush Drain: Run hot water down the drain to flush away debris.

Maintenance
- Clean Cable: After each use, thoroughly clean the cable to remove any debris, grease, or hair. Wipe it down with a damp cloth.
- Lubricate Cable: Apply a light coat of lubricant (e.g., WD-40 or a silicone spray) to the cable to prevent rust and maintain flexibility.
- Inspect for Damage: Regularly inspect the cable, drum housing, and handle for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Replace damaged components if necessary.
- Storage: Store the auger in a dry, cool place to prevent rust and degradation of materials. Ensure the cable is fully retracted into the drum before storage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cable will not advance | Cable is kinked; Clog is too dense; Quick-lock mechanism is too tight. | Retract cable and inspect for kinks. Loosen quick-lock. Rotate and push gently. If clog is too dense, consider professional help. |
| Cable is difficult to retract | Cable is caught on an obstruction; Quick-lock mechanism is too tight; Cable is dirty/rusty. | Rotate the drum while retracting. Loosen quick-lock. Clean and lubricate cable. |
| Drain still clogged after use | Clog is too far down; Clog is too large/solid; Incorrect technique. | Ensure cable reached the clog. Try power drill operation. Repeat the process. If persistent, consult a plumber. |
