3. Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to properly assemble your clarinet. Handle all parts with care to avoid damage to the keys and pads.

3.1 Assembling the Clarinet

  1. Prepare the Corks: Apply a small amount of cork grease (not included, but recommended) to the corks on the upper and lower joints. This helps with smooth assembly and prevents cork damage.
  2. Attach the Lower Joint to the Upper Joint: Hold the upper joint in your left hand and the lower joint in your right. Align the bridge key on the upper joint with the corresponding key on the lower joint. Gently twist and push the lower joint onto the upper joint, ensuring the bridge key mechanism is not bent.
  3. Attach the Bell: Hold the assembled body and gently twist and push the bell onto the bottom of the lower joint.
  4. Attach the Barrel: Gently twist and push the barrel onto the top of the upper joint.
  5. Attach the Mouthpiece: Gently twist and push the mouthpiece onto the barrel. Ensure the flat side of the mouthpiece (where the reed will be placed) aligns with the keys on the top of the clarinet.
  6. Attach the Reed: Place a reed on the flat side of the mouthpiece, aligning it with the tip. Secure it with the ligature, tightening the screws just enough to hold the reed firmly without overtightening.

4. Operating Instructions

Once assembled, you can begin to play your clarinet. Proper embouchure and breath control are key to producing a clear tone.

4.1 Holding the Clarinet

  • Hold the clarinet with your left hand on the upper joint and your right hand on the lower joint.
  • The fixed thumb rest on the back of the lower joint is designed for comfort and to reduce playing fatigue.
  • Ensure your fingers are curved and positioned over the keys and tone holes.

4.2 Producing Sound

  • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, covering the reed with your lower lip and sealing around the mouthpiece with your upper lip.
  • Apply gentle, steady air pressure through the mouthpiece. The bladder pads on the keys ensure a tight seal over the tone holes, enhancing sound stability.
  • Experiment with breath support and embouchure to find a clear, focused tone.

Regular maintenance is crucial for preserving the sound quality and extending the life of your clarinet. Your instrument comes with a complete cleaning kit.

5.1 After Each Use

  • Swab the Interior: Use the cleaning cloth provided to swab out the inside of the clarinet. Pass the weighted end of the swab through each section (mouthpiece, barrel, upper joint, lower joint, bell) to remove moisture.
  • Clean the Mouthpiece: Use a mouthpiece brush (not included) and mild soap and water to clean the mouthpiece. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.
  • Wipe Keys and Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe down the keys and body of the clarinet to remove fingerprints and oils.

5.2 Periodic Maintenance

  • Cork Grease: Apply cork grease to the tenon corks as needed to ensure smooth assembly and prevent wear.
  • Check Pads: Periodically inspect the pads under the keys for wear or damage. Replace them if necessary to maintain an airtight seal.
  • Key Mechanism: Use the provided screwdriver for minor adjustments to the key screws if they become loose. Avoid overtightening.
