Setup

  1. Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment on the back of the device. Insert 4 AAA 1.5V batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
  2. Initial Check: Press the power button to turn on the device. The LCD screen should illuminate.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for accurate measurements:

  1. Prepare the Device: Remove the red protective cover from the end of the probes. Turn on the tester by pressing the power button.
  2. Insert Probes: Insert the probes into the soil or water to a depth of approximately 3 to 5 inches (about 10 cm). Ensure the probes are fully submerged in water or firmly in contact with the soil.
  3. Read Data: Wait for approximately 10 seconds for the readings to stabilize. The current measurement will be displayed on the LCD screen.
  4. Switch Display Modes:
    • Press the "pH" button to switch between pH and temperature (°C/°F) readings.
    • Press the "Water" button to switch between EC and TDS readings for water.
    • Long press the "Nutrient/Moist" button to toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius for temperature.
  5. Remove and Clean: After each use, remove the probes from the soil or water and wipe them clean with a cloth.

Important Notes:

  • The soil tester is not designed for direct measurement of liquids (except for EC/TDS functions when specifically measuring water).
  • If the soil is too dry or hard, do not force the probes. Lightly moisten the test area and wait 10 minutes before measurement to prevent damage to the device.
  • For soil measurements, ensure the probes are inserted deep enough to get an accurate reading from the root zone.

Understanding Measurements

Water TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and EC (Electrical Conductivity):

TDS refers to the total concentration of dissolved substances in water, while EC measures the electrical conductivity, which is directly related to the amount of dissolved salts and minerals. These measurements help assess water purity and nutrient levels in hydroponic solutions or irrigation water.

Water TDS Range (0-1000 ppm)
TDS (ppm)Water Quality
0-50Ultra pure water
50-150High-quality soft water
150-300Common tap water
300-500Medium hard water
500-800Highly hard water / lightly mineralized water
800-1000Extremely hard water / Potentially saline-alkaline water
>1000Non-potable water (High salinity-alkalinity / Pollution risk)

Tip: High or low TDS is not inherently safe or unsafe; it needs to be analyzed in conjunction with specific ingredients. High TDS may indicate mineral water or polluted water.

Soil pH:

Soil pH indicates the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, which significantly impacts nutrient availability for plants.

  • 3-4: Strongly Acidic
  • 5-6: Slightly Acidic
  • 7: Neutral
  • 8-9: Slightly Alkaline

Soil Moisture:

Measures the water content in the soil, helping determine when to water your plants.

  • DRY- (5-20%): Very Dry
  • DRY+ (20-40%): Dry
  • NOR (40-60%): Normal
  • WET- (60-80%): Wet
  • WET+ (80-95%): Very Wet

Soil Fertility:

Indicates the nutrient levels in the soil, crucial for plant growth.

  • 0-30%: Low Fertility
  • 30-60%: Medium Fertility
  • 60-95%: High Fertility

Light Intensity:

Measures the ambient light intensity, helping ensure plants receive adequate light.

  • LOW- (0-1000 Lux)
  • LOW (1000-2000 Lux)
  • LOW+ (2000-3000 Lux)
  • NOR- (3000-4000 Lux)
  • NOR (4000-5000 Lux)
  • NOR+ (5000-6000 Lux)
  • HGH- (6000-7000 Lux)
  • HGH (7000-8000 Lux)
  • HGH+ (8000-9999 Lux)

Maintenance

  • Probe Cleaning: Always wipe the probes clean with a soft cloth after each use to prevent residue buildup, which can affect accuracy. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Replace the protective red cover on the probes when not in use.
  • Battery Replacement: The device will indicate when batteries are low. Replace all 4 AAA batteries simultaneously to ensure optimal performance.

Troubleshooting

  • Inaccurate Readings:
    • Ensure probes are clean and free of soil or water residue.
    • Verify probes are inserted to the correct depth (3-5 inches for soil).
    • Check battery level; low batteries can affect accuracy.
    • For soil measurements, ensure the soil is not excessively dry or hard. Moisten if necessary.
  • Device Not Turning On:
    • Check if batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Light Sensor Issues:
    • Ensure the light sensor area on the device is clean and unobstructed.
    • Note that the light sensor may show very high readings under strong artificial full-spectrum LED lights, potentially exceeding its practical range for comparison with natural sunlight.
  • Cannot Measure Liquid pH:
    • This device is designed for soil pH measurement and is not suitable for directly measuring the pH of liquids.
