Fluke 107 AC/DC Current Handheld Digital Multimeter User Manual

Model: FLUKE-107

Introduction

The Fluke 107 is a compact, handheld digital multimeter designed for basic electrical measurements. It provides accurate readings for voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, and duty cycle, along with continuity and diode test functions. Its portable design makes it suitable for various applications, from professional use to hobbyist projects.

Setup

Battery Installation

The Fluke 107 comes with two AAA batteries pre-installed. If replacement is needed:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter.
  3. Open the battery compartment cover by twisting the lock and sliding it open.
  4. Remove the old batteries and insert two new AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
  5. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Connecting Test Leads

The Fluke 107 has three recessed banana jacks:

Always connect the black test lead to the COM jack. Connect the red test lead to the appropriate jack based on the measurement you intend to perform.

Using the Smart Strap Magnetic Lanyard

The included Smart Strap allows for hands-free operation by attaching the meter to a ferrous metal surface or by configuring it as a stand. The strap has a slot that fits into the meter's case and secures with Velcro. The magnetic end can then be used to attach the meter to metal surfaces or to itself to form a viewing stand.

Measurement Functions

The meter is auto-ranging by default for most functions, simplifying operation.

  1. Voltage Measurement (AC/DC):
    • Turn the rotary knob to V~ for AC voltage or V- for DC voltage.
    • Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Apply the test probes across the circuit or component to measure voltage.
  2. Current Measurement (AC/DC):
    • Turn the rotary knob to A~ (AC) or A- (DC). Use the yellow button to toggle between AC and DC if needed.
    • Connect the red test lead to the A (10A FUSED) jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Important: Connect the meter in series with the circuit to measure current. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the meter.
  3. Resistance Measurement (Ω):
    • Turn the rotary knob to Ω.
    • Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Apply the test probes across the component. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  4. Continuity Test:
    • Turn the rotary knob to Ω. Press the yellow button until the continuity icon (speaker symbol) appears.
    • Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • A continuous beep indicates a complete circuit (resistance less than 70Ω). "OL" indicates an open circuit.
  5. Diode Test:
    • Turn the rotary knob to Ω. Press the yellow button until the diode icon (arrow with line) appears.
    • Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Place the red probe on the anode and black probe on the cathode of the diode. The display shows the forward voltage drop. Reverse the probes; "OL" should be displayed for a good diode.
  6. Capacitance Measurement:
    • Turn the rotary knob to the capacitance symbol (-||-).
    • Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Important: Discharge capacitors before connecting them to the meter. Apply probes across the capacitor. Readings may take up to 18 seconds to stabilize.
  7. Frequency (Hz) and Duty Cycle (%) Measurement:
    • Select AC Volts or AC Amps function.
    • Press the Hz % button to display frequency. Press again for duty cycle. Press a third time to return to voltage/current display.

Auto Power-Off

The meter automatically powers off after 20 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. This feature can be disabled if continuous operation is required.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the display clean and free from scratches.

Battery Replacement

Refer to the "Battery Installation" section under Setup for detailed instructions. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display.

Fuse Check and Replacement

The Fluke 107 has a single internal fuse for the Amps function. To check the fuse:

  1. Turn the selector switch to the Ω position.
  2. Plug the red test lead into the VΩHz jack.
  3. Insert the probe tip of the red test lead into the A (10A FUSED) jack until electrical contact is made.
  4. A reading of less than 0.5Ω indicates a good fuse. An "OL" reading indicates a blown fuse that requires replacement.

Fuse replacement requires opening the meter case by removing three screws. It is recommended that fuse replacement be performed by qualified personnel or a Fluke service center.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
"OL" (Overload) displayedInput value exceeds selected range; open circuit in continuity/diode test; blown fuse in current mode.Ensure correct function/range is selected. Check for open circuits. Check fuse in current mode.
No display or dim displayLow battery; meter off; damaged display.Replace batteries. Turn meter ON. Contact service if display is damaged.
Inaccurate readingsLow battery; incorrect function/range; poor test lead connection; external interference.Replace batteries. Verify function/range. Ensure leads are fully inserted. Move away from strong electromagnetic fields.
No current measurementBlown fuse; incorrect connection (not in series).Check and replace fuse if necessary. Ensure meter is connected in series with the circuit.
