5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Mounting the Transformer

The transformer is designed for wall mounting. Select a suitable outdoor location that is protected from direct heavy rain and is close to a 120V AC power outlet. Ensure the mounting surface is sturdy enough to support the transformer's weight.

  1. Mark the positions for the two mounting holes on your desired surface.
  2. Drill pilot holes if necessary and insert appropriate screws (not included) into the wall, leaving a small gap between the screw head and the wall.
  3. Align the keyhole slots on the back of the transformer with the screws and slide the transformer down to secure it.
  4. Tighten the screws to firmly hold the transformer in place.

5.2 Wiring Low Voltage Lights

Before wiring, ensure the transformer is unplugged from the 120V AC power source.

  1. Determine the desired output voltage for your landscape lights: 12V AC or 15V AC. The transformer provides terminals for both. For longer wire runs or more lights, 15V AC may help compensate for voltage drop.
  2. Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of your low voltage landscape lighting wires.
  3. Connect one wire from your lighting circuit to a 'COM' (Common) terminal on the transformer.
  4. Connect the other wire from your lighting circuit to either the '12V' or '15V' terminal, depending on your selection.
  5. Ensure all wire connections are tight and secure within the terminals.
  6. Verify that the total wattage of all connected lights does not exceed 150W.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Manual Operation

After installation and wiring are complete, plug the transformer into a grounded 120V AC outdoor outlet.

  • ON/OFF Button: Press the 'ON/OFF' button on the control panel to manually turn the connected lights on or off.
  • RESET Button: The 'RESET' button is used for network pairing. Refer to Section 7 for smart control setup.

7. Smart Control Setup (Tuya & Google Home)

The Brilliantool transformer can be controlled remotely via the Smart Life app and integrated with voice assistants like Google Home.

7.1 App Download and Account Creation

  1. Download the 'Smart Life' app from the Apple App Store (for iOS 8.0 or higher) or Google Play Store (for Android 4.1 or higher).
  2. Open the app and register for a new account or log in if you already have one.

7.2 Pairing the Transformer with the App

Ensure your Wi-Fi network is 2.4GHz (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n) and the transformer is within 80 feet of your Wi-Fi router in a free area.

  1. Plug in the transformer.
  2. Press and hold the 'RESET' button on the transformer's control panel for approximately 5-7 seconds until the Wi-Fi indicator light starts blinking rapidly. This indicates it's in pairing mode.
  3. Open the Smart Life app, tap '+' or 'Add Device'.
  4. Select 'Electrical' > 'Transformer' or 'Smart Plug (Wi-Fi)'.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to connect the transformer to your Wi-Fi network. You will need to enter your Wi-Fi password.
  6. Once successfully paired, the Wi-Fi indicator light on the transformer will stop blinking and remain solid. You can now control the transformer via the Smart Life app.

7.3 Integrating with Google Home

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap '+' > 'Set up device' > 'Works with Google'.
  3. Search for 'Smart Life' and link your Smart Life account.
  4. Follow the prompts to assign the transformer to a room and give it a recognizable name (e.g., "Garden Lights").
  5. You can now control your landscape lights using voice commands (e.g., "Hey Google, turn on Garden Lights").

8. Maintenance

  • Periodically inspect the transformer and wiring for any signs of damage, wear, or loose connections.
  • Keep the transformer's casing clean and free from debris. Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning; do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure the ventilation openings (if any) are not obstructed to prevent overheating.
  • If the transformer is not in use for an extended period, it is recommended to unplug it from the power source.

9. Troubleshooting

9.1 Lights Not Turning On

  • Check Power: Ensure the transformer is plugged into a working 120V AC outlet and the circuit breaker is not tripped.
  • Transformer ON: Verify the transformer is manually turned on via the ON/OFF button or through the Smart Life app.
  • Wiring: Inspect all low voltage wiring connections for looseness or corrosion. Ensure wires are correctly connected to COM and 12V/15V terminals.
  • Bulbs/Fixtures: Check if individual light bulbs or fixtures are faulty. Test them with a known working power source if possible.
  • Overload: Confirm the total wattage of connected lights does not exceed 150W. Disconnect some lights to test if an overload is causing the issue.

9.2 Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues

  • 2.4GHz Network: Ensure your Wi-Fi network is 2.4GHz. The transformer does not support 5GHz networks.
  • Signal Strength: Move the transformer closer to your Wi-Fi router or consider a Wi-Fi extender if the signal is weak. The effective range is 80ft in a free area.
  • Reset Pairing: Press and hold the 'RESET' button until the Wi-Fi indicator blinks rapidly, then attempt to pair again through the Smart Life app.
  • Router Settings: Check your router settings for any restrictions on new device connections.
