Safety Information

Your safety and the safety of others are paramount. Always follow basic safety precautions when using this appliance to reduce the risk of fire, explosion, electric shock, and injury.

  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when operating the water heater, especially if used indoors or in enclosed spaces. Propane combustion produces carbon monoxide, which is odorless and can be fatal.
  • Propane Gas: Use only liquid propane (LP) gas. Ensure all gas connections are tight and leak-free before operation. Never use a damaged or leaking propane tank.
  • Water Pressure: The unit requires a minimum water pressure of 3.6 PSI to ignite. Do not operate if water pressure is too low. Maximum water pressure is 116 PSI.
  • Temperature: The maximum water temperature is 113°F (45°C). Exercise caution to prevent scalding.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the appliance during operation.
  • Installation: Follow all local codes and regulations for gas appliance installation. If unsure, consult a qualified professional.

This water heater is equipped with the following safety features:

  • Overheat Protection: Automatically shuts off the unit if water temperature exceeds safe limits.
  • Dry Combustion Protection: Prevents the burner from igniting if there is no water flow.
  • Antifreeze Protection: Helps prevent damage from freezing temperatures (requires proper draining or use of antifreeze solution).
  • Low-Flow Protection: Ensures the burner only ignites when minimum water flow is detected.
  • Flame Fault Protection: Shuts off gas supply if the flame extinguishes unexpectedly.
  • High Water Pressure Protection: Protects the unit from excessive water pressure.

Setup

Proper setup is crucial for safe and effective operation. Ensure you have all necessary components and tools before beginning.

1. Unpacking and Inspection:

  • Carefully remove the water heater from its packaging.
  • Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during shipping. Do not use if damaged.
  • Verify all included components are present.

2. Battery Installation:

  • Locate the battery box, typically at the bottom of the unit (refer to Product Overview diagram).
  • Insert two (2) 3V D-cell batteries (not included) according to the polarity markings. These batteries power the ignition system.

3. Water Connections:

  • Connect your cold water supply line to the Water Inlet (G 1/2").
  • Connect your hot water output line (e.g., shower hose) to the Water Outlet (G 1/2").
  • Ensure all water connections are secure and leak-free. Use appropriate thread sealant if necessary.

4. Gas Connection:

  • Connect the propane gas supply hose to the Gas Inlet (G 1/2").
  • Connect the other end of the hose to your propane tank.
  • Tighten all gas connections firmly.
  • Leak Test: After connecting, open the propane tank valve slowly. Apply a soapy water solution to all gas connections. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. Close the gas valve immediately and re-tighten connections. Repeat the test until no bubbles are present. Never use an open flame to check for gas leaks.

5. Placement:

  • Place the water heater on a stable, level surface in a well-ventilated area.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the unit for proper airflow and safety.
  • Avoid placing near flammable materials.

Operation

Once the unit is properly set up and all connections are secure, you can begin operation.

1. Initial Start-up:

  • Open the cold water supply valve completely.
  • Open the propane tank valve slowly.
  • Turn on the hot water faucet or shower head. The water heater will detect water flow and automatically ignite. You should hear a clicking sound followed by the sound of the burner.
  • The digital display will show the current water temperature.

2. Adjusting Water Temperature:

Image: Control panel of the Baotree water heater, illustrating the Summer/Winter mode switch and the gas and water flow regulators.

  • Gas Input Regulator: Rotate this knob to increase or decrease the gas flow to the burner. More gas means higher water temperature.
  • Water Output Regulator: Rotate this knob to adjust the water flow rate. A slower flow rate generally results in hotter water, while a faster flow rate results in cooler water.
  • Summer/Winter Mode Switch: This switch optimizes heating efficiency based on ambient temperature.
Summer Mode: Activates 1/4 of the burner for energy saving when less heating is required.
Winter Mode: Activates all burners for full heating capacity in colder conditions.
  • Adjust both the gas and water regulators in conjunction with the mode switch to achieve your desired water temperature.

3. Shutting Down:

  • Close the hot water faucet or shower head. The burner will automatically shut off.
  • Close the propane tank valve.
  • Close the cold water supply valve.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient performance of your water heater.

1. Cleaning:

  • Periodically wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure the ventilation grilles are free from dust and debris to maintain proper airflow.

2. Winterization (Antifreeze Protection):

If the water heater will be exposed to freezing temperatures, it is essential to drain all water from the unit to prevent damage.

  • Shut off the gas supply and water supply.
  • Disconnect the water inlet and outlet hoses.
  • Allow all water to drain completely from the unit. You may need to tilt the unit slightly to ensure full drainage.
  • Alternatively, a non-toxic RV antifreeze solution can be circulated through the water lines if recommended by a professional.

3. Battery Replacement:

  • If the igniter fails to click or the unit does not ignite, check and replace the D-cell batteries in the battery box.

Troubleshooting

Refer to this section for common issues and their solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No hot water / Unit does not igniteNo water flow or insufficient water pressure
