Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to install your deadbolt lock. A screwdriver is typically the only tool required.
- Prepare the Door: Ensure your door has the necessary holes for a standard deadbolt installation. The deadbolt is designed to fit door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" (35mm-45mm) and features an adjustable latch for backsets of 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60mm or 70mm).
- Install the Latch Mechanism: Insert the deadbolt latch mechanism into the edge of the door. Ensure it is oriented correctly with the bolt facing the door frame. Secure it with the provided screws.
- Install the Exterior Deadbolt: Place the exterior keyed deadbolt component through the hole on the outside of the door, aligning it with the latch mechanism.
- Install the Interior Deadbolt: Position the interior thumb-turn deadbolt component on the inside of the door, aligning it with the exterior component and the latch mechanism. Ensure the spindle from the exterior part engages with the interior mechanism.
- Secure the Assembly: Use the long mounting screws to connect the interior and exterior deadbolt components, tightening them securely. Test the thumb-turn and key operation to ensure smooth movement of the deadbolt.
- Install the Strike Plate and Box: On the door frame, install the strike box first, followed by the strike plate, ensuring they align perfectly with the deadbolt when the door is closed. Secure both with the appropriate screws.

Operating Instructions
The hiencetec SMF-D101-Black deadbolt lock offers dual control for enhanced security and convenience.
- Exterior Operation: To lock or unlock the deadbolt from the outside, insert one of the provided keys into the keyhole and turn it until the bolt extends or retracts fully.
- Interior Operation: To lock or unlock the deadbolt from the inside, use the thumb-turn knob. Rotate the knob to extend or retract the deadbolt.
Always ensure the deadbolt is fully extended when locking for maximum security.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your deadbolt lock, periodic maintenance is recommended:
- Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the matte black finish.
- Lubrication: Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based spray lubricant to the keyway and the latch mechanism once a year. This helps maintain smooth operation and prevents sticking.
- Screw Tightness: Periodically check and tighten all mounting screws to ensure the lock remains securely fastened to the door.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues with your deadbolt lock, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Deadbolt is Sticking or Hard to Turn:
- Check for proper alignment of the strike plate on the door frame. Adjust if necessary.
- Apply lubricant to the keyway and the latch mechanism.
- Ensure all mounting screws are not overtightened, which can cause binding.
- Key Does Not Turn Smoothly:
- Ensure you are using one of the original keys provided with the lock.
- Apply graphite lubricant into the keyway.
- Check for any debris in the keyway.
- Deadbolt Does Not Fully Extend/Retract:
- Verify that the latch mechanism is correctly installed and not obstructed.
- Inspect the strike plate and strike box for any obstructions or misalignment.
