Image 4.1: Labeled diagram showing the main parts of the microscope, including the guide (eyepiece), coarse tuning knob, cylindrical objective lenses, loading platform (stage), reflector, and base.

  • Eyepiece (Guide): Where you look to observe the specimen.
  • Coarse Tuning Knob: Used for large adjustments in focus.
  • Fine Tuning Knob: Used for small, precise adjustments in focus (often integrated with coarse tuning).
  • Objective Lenses (Cylindrical objective): Multiple lenses with different magnifications, typically mounted on a revolving nosepiece.
  • Stage (Loading platform): The flat platform where the specimen slide is placed.
  • Stage Clips: Hold the specimen slide in place.
  • Reflector/Illuminator: Provides light to illuminate the specimen.
  • Base: The bottom support of the microscope.

5. Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the microscope and all accessories from the packaging. Place the microscope on a stable, level surface.
  2. Eyepiece Installation: Insert the desired eyepiece lens (e.g., 10X or 16X) into the top tube of the microscope.
  3. Power Connection (if applicable): If your microscope has an illuminator requiring power, connect the power adapter to the microscope and then to a suitable power outlet.
  4. Adjust Observation Angle: The microscope head can be adjusted to a 45° angle for comfortable viewing. Loosen the locking screw (if present) and tilt the head, then secure it.

6. Operation

  1. Placing the Specimen: Place a prepared specimen slide onto the stage, securing it with the stage clips.
  2. Selecting Objective Lens: Rotate the revolving nosepiece to select the lowest power objective lens (e.g., 4X). Ensure it clicks into place.
  3. Adjusting Illumination: Turn on the illuminator (if applicable) and adjust its brightness or the reflector's angle to achieve even illumination of the specimen.
  4. Coarse Focusing: While looking through the eyepiece, use the coarse tuning knob to bring the specimen into approximate focus. Move the stage up until the specimen is almost touching the objective lens, then slowly lower it until the image appears.
  5. Fine Focusing: Once the specimen is roughly in focus, use the fine tuning knob for precise adjustments to achieve a sharp, clear image.
  6. Changing Magnification: To increase magnification, rotate the revolving nosepiece to a higher power objective lens (e.g., 10X, 40X). Re-adjust fine focus as needed. Avoid using the coarse focus knob with high power objectives to prevent damage to the slide or lens.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning Lenses: Use only specialized lens cleaning paper and lens cleaning solution. Gently wipe the lens surfaces. Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
  • Cleaning Body: Wipe the microscope body with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid getting moisture into electrical components.
  • Storage: When not in use, cover the microscope with the provided dust cover or place it in the storage bag to protect it from dust and debris. Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Handling: Always carry the microscope by its arm and base. Avoid sudden impacts or vibrations.
