Setup Instructions

Important Compatibility Note: USB-C Port

Before connecting the docking station, ensure your laptop's USB-C port supports video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode), power delivery, and data transfer. Ports that only support data transfer or charging will not function correctly with the docking station's full capabilities.

Initial Connection

  1. Connect the USB-C cable from the docking station to a compatible USB-C port on your laptop.
  2. Connect your external monitors to the HDMI ports on the docking station.
  3. Connect any USB peripherals (keyboard, mouse, external drives) to the available USB-A or USB-C ports on the docking station.
  4. For power delivery, connect a 100W+ USB-C power adapter (not included) to the PD port on the docking station.

Operating Instructions

Dual 4K Display Configuration

The docking station supports dual monitors via its two HDMI ports, allowing for extended or mirrored display modes. The final output resolution depends on your laptop's capabilities, HDMI cables, and the docking station's specifications.

Comparison of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 transfer speeds

Figure 6: Illustration comparing the data transfer speeds of USB 3.0 (5Gbps) versus USB 2.0, highlighting the faster performance of USB 3.0.

Windows Display Modes:

  • Extend Mode: Displays different content on each monitor (Laptop, Monitor 1, Monitor 2).
  • Mirror Mode: Duplicates content across all displays.
  • Partial Extend/Mirror: Various combinations of extending and mirroring.

macOS Display Modes:

  • Extend Mode: Allows one external monitor to extend the display.
  • Mirror Mode: Duplicates the main screen to external monitors.
  • Note: Due to macOS system-level restrictions, multi-display extended mode is not supported via most docking stations. All connected external monitors will mirror the primary display instead of extending it.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Acer USB-C Docking Station, please follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the device clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Store the docking station in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Handle the device and its cables with care to prevent damage to ports or internal components.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the docking station.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • No Display Output or Flickering Screen:
    • Ensure your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
    • Check all cable connections (USB-C to laptop, HDMI to monitors) are secure.
    • Try different HDMI cables, preferably high-quality ones (HDMI 2.1/DP2.0).
    • Adjust display resolution and refresh rate in your operating system settings.
    • Restart your laptop and reconnect the docking station.
  • Data Transfer Issues or Slow Speeds:
    • Ensure the connected USB devices are functioning correctly.
    • Verify that the USB-C port on your laptop supports data transfer.
    • Try connecting devices to different USB ports on the docking station.
  • Charging Not Working or Slow:
    • Ensure your laptop's USB-C port supports Power Delivery (PD).
    • Use a 100W+ USB-C power adapter and a compatible USB-C to USB-C cable for optimal charging.
    • Check if the power adapter is securely connected to the docking station's PD port.
  • macOS Multi-Display Extended Mode Limitation:

This is due to macOS system-level restrictions. Apple's software does not support multi-display extended mode via most docking stations. As a result, all connected external monitors will mirror the primary display instead of extending it.

  • Unable to achieve desired high resolution on external display:
    • Laptop GPU limitation: Check your graphics card specifications to ensure it supports the desired resolution.
    • Cable quality issue: Use higher-specification cables (HDMI 2.1/DP2.0).
    • Display capability: Confirm your monitor supports the target resolution.
    • System setting incorrect: Adjust in display settings (Windows: Display Settings; Mac: System Preferences).
    • Key: The entire chain (laptop dock cable display) must support your target resolution.
