4. Setup and Operation

4.1. System Requirements

To utilize the Waveshare ESL e-Paper displays for dynamic content refreshing, an ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station is required. This base station acts as the central hub for communication between your cloud platform and the e-paper displays.

  • ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station (sold separately)
  • Internet connection for cloud platform access
  • Smart phone or tablet for management (optional, via cloud platform)

4.2. Initial Setup

  1. Power On Base Station: Connect the ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station to a power source (48V PoE supported).
  2. Network Connection: Ensure the base station is connected to your network (Wi-Fi 2.4GHz + 5GHz supported).
  3. Cloud Platform Integration: Access the ESL Waveshare Cloud Platform (esl.waveshare.cloud) via a web browser. Follow the platform's instructions to register your base station and displays.
  4. Display Pairing: The e-paper displays will automatically connect to the base station within its coverage range (10-30m indoors). Specific pairing steps may be detailed in the ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station manual or the cloud platform interface.

4.3. Refreshing Content

Content on the e-paper displays is refreshed through the ESL Waveshare Cloud Platform. This platform allows you to upload new images or data, which are then transmitted wirelessly to the displays via the ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station.

  1. Prepare Content: Create or select the image/text content you wish to display. Ensure it is formatted correctly for the 3.5inch display (384 x 184 pixels resolution).
  2. Upload to Cloud Platform: Use the cloud platform interface to upload your prepared content.
  3. Assign to Displays: Assign the uploaded content to specific e-paper displays or groups of displays.
  4. Initiate Refresh: Trigger the refresh command from the cloud platform. The base station will then transmit the new content to the assigned displays.

Note: The e-paper displays only consume significant power during the refresh process. Once the content is displayed, they require no power to maintain the image.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

To clean the display surface, gently wipe it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. For stubborn smudges, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture, as these can damage the display or casing.

5.2. Battery Replacement

The e-paper displays are equipped with replaceable batteries designed for approximately 5 years of life. When the battery level is low, the display may indicate this or fail to refresh content. Refer to the specific instructions provided with the display or on the Waveshare Wiki for detailed steps on how to safely open the ABS case and replace the battery.

Always ensure the device is powered off before attempting battery replacement. Use only compatible replacement batteries.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Display Not Refreshing:
    • Ensure the ESL-Gateway-AP Base Station is powered on and connected to the internet.
    • Verify the e-paper display is within the base station's coverage range (10-30m indoors).
    • Check the battery level of the e-paper display. Replace if necessary.
    • Confirm the content is correctly uploaded and assigned on the cloud platform.
  • Display Shows Partial or Corrupted Image:
    • Attempt to refresh the display again from the cloud platform.
    • Ensure the image resolution and format are compatible with the display (384 x 184 pixels for 3.5inch).
    • Check for any physical damage to the display.
  • Base Station Connectivity Issues:
    • Restart the base station.
    • Check network cables or Wi-Fi connection.
