1. Introduction and Overview

This manual provides detailed instructions for the Heltecbms 17-21S 5A Active Balancer, designed for Lifepo4, Lithium, and Lipo battery energy transfer and equalization. This device ensures optimal battery performance and longevity by actively balancing cell voltages.

2.2 Battery Type Configuration (LTO/NUM/LFP)

The balancer is configured by default for Ternary Lithium and Lifepo4 (LFP) batteries. If you are using Lithium Titanate (LTO) batteries, you must adjust the welding points on the board as shown in the diagram below.

• NUM/LFP (Default): Weld points 2 and 3.
• LTO: Disconnect points 2 and 3, then weld points 1 and 2.

3. Operating Instructions

Once properly installed, the active balancer operates automatically to equalize cell voltages within your battery pack.

3.1 Automatic Equalization

The equalization board connects to the battery pack and automatically begins the balancing process. It uses a capacitor fit to transfer charge between cells, ensuring that all cells maintain a balanced voltage level. The equalization current ranges from 0 to 5.5A; a smaller current indicates a more balanced battery.

3.2 Sleep Mode

The balancer features a manual sleep switch. Activating sleep mode reduces the quiescent current to less than 0.1mA, conserving battery power when balancing is not required or during long-term storage.

Symptom: Balancer not active, even when connected.

Possible Cause: Battery voltage is too low (below 3.0V per cell).

Solution: Recharge your battery pack. The balancer will resume operation automatically once the voltage rises above the protection threshold.

5.2 No Balancing Activity

Symptom: Balancer appears inactive, or cells remain unbalanced.

Possible Causes:

• Incorrect wiring: Double-check all connections according to the wiring diagrams in Section 2.1. Ensure correct polarity.
• Battery type misconfiguration: Verify that the welding points for LTO/NUM/LFP are correctly set for your battery chemistry (refer to Section 2.2).
• Manual sleep switch engaged: Ensure the manual sleep switch is in the "on" or active position.
• Severely unbalanced cells: For very large voltage differences, initial balancing may take time. Ensure the battery pack is within the recommended capacity range (60-300AH).
