5.2 Mode Selection
The MT93 offers four distinct measurement modes for different material types. Press the corresponding button to select the desired mode:
- PACKING Mode: For easily absorbent packing materials like corrugated paper and cloth bags.
- BUILDING Mode: For building materials such as cement and plaster.
- SOFT WOOD Mode: For low-density wood types.
- HARD WOOD Mode: For higher-density wood types.

5.3 Taking Measurements
- Remove the protective cap from the pins.
- Select the appropriate measurement mode for your material (e.g., Soft Wood, Hard Wood, Building, Packing).
- Firmly push the two pins into the material you wish to measure. For wood, ensure pins are inserted along the grain and deep enough to get an accurate reading, ideally at least 5cm from the edge. The pins can measure moisture content up to 12mm deep.
- Read the moisture content percentage displayed on the screen. The color bar indicator will also show the moisture level (Dry, Risk, Wet).
- If the reading is "Lo", the material under test is dry.
- After measurement, carefully withdraw the pins and replace the protective cap.

Figure 6: Illustration of the MT93 measuring moisture depth. The diagram shows how moisture content varies at different depths, and indicates that "Lo" on the screen means the material is dry.
5.4 HOLD Function
To freeze the current reading on the display, press the HOLD button once. Press it again to release the hold and resume live readings.

Figure 7: The HOLD function allows you to freeze the measurement on the screen for convenient viewing.
5.5 Automatic Alarm
The device features an automatic alarm that activates when the detected moisture content exceeds predefined thresholds for each material type. The display will also show a "WET" indicator and an audible alert may sound.

Figure 8: This table outlines the moisture level thresholds for Dry, Risk, and Wet categories across different material modes, triggering audible and visual alarms.

Figure 9: The alarm prompt icon indicates when moisture levels exceed safe thresholds.
5.6 Calibration
Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of your moisture meter. The MT93 has a self-test function and a manual calibration method.
- Self-Test: The device performs a self-test upon startup. If the self-test result is not within the expected range (e.g., 21.3%~22.3% for Packing mode), manual calibration is required.
- Manual Calibration Method:
- Select "Packing Mode".
- Press and hold the "HOLD" button for 5 seconds. The screen will display "CAL".
- Insert the pins into the designated holes on the protective cap.
- The device will calibrate itself.

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the meter in a cool, dry place with the protective cap on the pins. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Battery: Recharge the battery regularly, even if the device is not used frequently, to maintain battery health.
- Pin Replacement: Replace pins if they become bent, dull, or corroded to ensure accurate readings.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common questions and issues you might encounter with your moisture meter.
7.1 Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Why do the pin readings look different from pinless meters?
A: Pin meters measure moisture at a specific spot by touching the material and penetrating its surface. Pinless meters scan the surface quickly to give a reference value without penetration. The MT93 is a pin-type meter.
- Q: Is this as precise as a laboratory meter?
A: This tool is designed for home inspection, woodworking, and construction use with an accuracy of ±2.5%. It is not intended for laboratory testing, which typically requires higher precision instruments.
- Q: The meter reads "0.00%" or "Lo" even when I expect moisture.
A: Ensure the pins are fully inserted into the material. For wood, ensure the pins are oriented along the wood grain. If the material is very dry, "Lo" is the correct reading. If you suspect a malfunction, try calibrating the device as described in Section 5.6.
- Q: The alarm sounds frequently.
A: The alarm indicates that the moisture content exceeds the preset limit for the selected material mode. Refer to the moisture level table in Section 5.5 to understand the thresholds. If the alarm is unexpected, verify the material type and selected mode.
