Petzl OK SCREW-LOCK Carabiner Instruction Manual

Model: OK SCREW-LOCK

1. Introduction

The Petzl OK SCREW-LOCK Carabiner is a lightweight aluminum oval carabiner designed for optimal loading of devices with a wide section, such as pulleys, ascenders, and progress capture pulleys. Its symmetrical shape and SCREW-LOCK system make it suitable for various climbing and glacier travel applications, including environments where automatic locking systems might be prone to jamming due to contaminants.

4. Setup and Pre-Use Checks

Before each use, perform the following checks:

  1. Visual Inspection: Examine the carabiner for any cracks, sharp edges, corrosion, or deformation. Pay close attention to the gate, hinge pin, and locking mechanism.
  2. Gate Functionality: Open and close the gate several times to ensure it moves freely and closes completely without sticking.
  3. Locking Mechanism: Operate the SCREW-LOCK mechanism. Ensure it screws smoothly and fully covers the red indicator band when locked. When unlocked, the red band should be clearly visible.
  4. Compatibility: Verify that the carabiner is compatible with other equipment it will be used with (ropes, slings, pulleys, ascenders) and that all connections are secure.

  2. To Open: Push the gate inwards.
  3. To Close: Release the gate, allowing it to spring back to its closed position.
  4. To Lock: Rotate the screwgate clockwise until it is fully tightened and the red indicator band is completely covered. Ensure it is finger-tight.

5.2. Attaching to Devices

The oval shape of the Petzl OK carabiner is ideal for connecting to devices such as pulleys, ascenders, and belay devices. Its symmetrical design helps keep the load centered.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

Clean the carabiner with fresh water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents that could damage the aluminum or the locking mechanism.

6.2. Inspection

Regularly inspect the carabiner for signs of wear, corrosion, cracks, or deformation. Pay particular attention to the gate, hinge pin, and screwgate threads. If any damage is found, retire the carabiner immediately.

6.3. Storage

Store the carabiner in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Ensure it is clean and dry before storage.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1. Screwgate Jamming

If the screwgate becomes difficult to turn or jams, it may be due to dirt, mud, ice, or fine debris accumulating in the threads. Clean the screwgate thoroughly as described in the Maintenance section. If the issue persists after cleaning, the carabiner should be retired.

7.2. Gate Not Closing Properly

If the gate does not close completely or springs back slowly, check for debris obstructing the hinge or the gate opening. Clean the carabiner. If the gate mechanism is bent or damaged, retire the carabiner immediately.
