5. Installation

5.1 Recommended Placement

For optimal protection, install combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in every sleeping room and on every level of your home, including the basement. Ensure detectors are placed where they can be heard by all occupants.

  • Living Room: Detects fires or harmful gases where families spend significant time.
  • Bedroom: Warns of fires or carbon monoxide leaks while occupants are sleeping.
  • Kitchen: Utilizes dual-wave detection to differentiate cooking smoke from real fires, reducing false alarms.
  • Garage: Catches fire or carbon monoxide from vehicles or stored fuels.
  • Basement: Essential for detecting threats that may originate or spread from lower levels.

5.2 Areas to Avoid

  • Within 10 feet (3 meters) of cooking appliances to prevent nuisance alarms.
  • In excessively dusty, dirty, or greasy areas.
  • In areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms.
  • Near air vents, fans, or open windows that could interfere with detection.
  • In direct sunlight or areas subject to extreme temperatures.

5.3 Mounting Instructions

  1. Select a suitable mounting location on a ceiling or wall, following the placement guidelines.
  2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the two screw holes on the ceiling or wall.
  3. Drill holes at the marked positions. Insert the plastic anchor plugs if mounting into drywall or plaster.
  4. Secure the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall using the provided screws.
  5. Align the detector with the mounting bracket. There is a specific notch on one of the 'legs' of the detector that must align with the bracket for proper fit.
  6. Twist the detector clockwise onto the mounting bracket until it clicks securely into place. This action will activate the internal battery.
  7. Test the detector immediately after installation (refer to Section 6.1).

6. Operation

6.1 Testing the Detector

Test your detector weekly to ensure it is functioning correctly.

  1. Press and hold the "TEST/SILENCE" button located on the center of the detector for at least 3 seconds.
  2. The detector will emit a series of loud beeps and voice alerts (e.g., "Fire!", "Warning! Carbon Monoxide").
  3. Release the button. The alarm should stop.
  4. If the alarm does not sound or the voice alerts are unclear, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

6.2 Silence Function

The silence function can temporarily quiet nuisance alarms (e.g., from cooking) for approximately 10 hours.

  1. During a nuisance alarm, press the "TEST/SILENCE" button.
  2. The alarm will silence, and the green LED will flash every 10 seconds to indicate it is in silence mode.
  3. After approximately 10 hours, the detector will automatically return to normal operation. If the smoke or CO concentration is still high, the alarm will reactivate.

6.3 LED Indicators and Voice Alerts

The detector uses visual LED indicators and voice alerts to communicate its status:

  • Green LED (Flashing): Normal operation.
  • Red LED (Rapid Flashing) + Voice Alert "Fire!": Smoke detected.
  • Red LED (Rapid Flashing) + Voice Alert "Warning! Carbon Monoxide": Carbon Monoxide detected.
  • Yellow LED (Flashing) + Chirp: Fault or low battery. The unit needs replacement.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning Your Detector

Clean your detector at least once a month to remove dust and debris.

  1. Gently vacuum the exterior of the detector using the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner.
  2. Wipe the cover with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use cleaning solvents or sprays.
  3. Never paint the detector.

7.2 Battery Information

The SITERWELL GS886-H02 detector is equipped with a sealed 10-year lithium battery that is not user-replaceable. The detector is designed to operate for 10 years from the date of activation. When the battery reaches the end of its life, the unit will chirp and the yellow LED will flash, indicating it needs to be replaced. Do not attempt to replace the battery; replace the entire unit.
