5. Setup

This section guides you through the initial setup of your sewing machine. Please note that a motor and foot pedal are required for operation and are sold separately. Refer to the motor and foot pedal manufacturer's instructions for their installation.

5.1 Unpacking and Placement

  • Carefully remove the machine from its packaging.
  • Place the machine on a stable, level surface that can support its weight and provide ample workspace.
  • Ensure the area is well-lit and free from obstructions.

5.2 Needle Installation

The machine uses DP*5, 14# needles for general heavy-duty sewing. Always use the correct needle type and size for your fabric.

  1. Turn the handwheel towards you to raise the needle bar to its highest position.
  2. Loosen the needle clamp screw.
  3. Insert the new needle with the flat side facing away from you, pushing it up as far as it will go.
  4. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.

5.3 Threading the Machine

Proper threading is crucial for consistent stitch quality.

5.3.1 Winding the Bobbin

  1. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  2. Follow the thread path to the bobbin winder tension disc.
  3. Place the empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
  4. Wind the thread a few times manually around the bobbin.
  5. Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right to engage.
  6. Start the machine (via foot pedal) to wind the bobbin. Stop when the bobbin is full.
  7. Cut the thread and push the spindle back to the left.

5.3.2 Inserting the Bobbin

  1. Open the bobbin case cover.
  2. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise).
  3. Pull the thread through the tension spring of the bobbin case.
  4. Close the bobbin case cover.

5.3.3 Upper Threading

  1. Place the thread spool on the spool pin.
  2. Guide the thread through the upper thread guides.
  3. Pass the thread through the tension discs.
  4. Thread through the take-up lever.
  5. Guide the thread down through the remaining thread guides to the needle.
  6. Thread the needle from front to back.
  7. Pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate hole by turning the handwheel once.
  8. Pull both threads under the presser foot and towards the back of the machine.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On/Off

  • Ensure the machine is properly connected to a motor and power supply.
  • Turn on the power switch for the motor.
  • To turn off, switch off the motor power and unplug the machine.

6.2 Adjusting Stitch Length

The stitch length can be adjusted using the 1-5 stitch chuck dial on the side of the machine.

  • Rotate the dial to select the desired stitch length. Higher numbers indicate longer stitches.
  • Test on a scrap piece of fabric to ensure the desired length is achieved.

6.3 Adjusting Zigzag Width

The zigzag width can be adjusted from 0 to 0.354 inches (approximately 9mm).

  • Use the zigzag width lever or dial (if present) to set the desired width.
  • For straight stitching, set the zigzag width to 0.

6.4 Reverse Stitching

To reinforce seams, use the backstitch switch.

  • While sewing, press and hold the backstitch switch to sew in reverse.
  • Release the switch to resume forward stitching.

6.5 Starting and Stopping Sewing

  1. Place the fabric under the presser foot.
  2. Lower the presser foot using the presser foot lifter.
  3. Gently press the foot pedal to start sewing. Control speed by varying pressure on the pedal.
  4. To stop, release the foot pedal.
  5. Raise the presser foot and pull the fabric away from the needle, cutting the threads.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sewing machine.

7.1 Cleaning

  • Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
  • Use a small brush to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area, feed dogs, and around the needle plate.
  • Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

7.2 Oiling

  • Refer to the oiling points indicated in the detailed diagram (if provided in the physical manual) or common industrial sewing machine oiling points.
  • Apply a small drop of high-quality sewing machine oil to designated points, typically moving metal parts.
