Setup

  1. Disassembly: Unscrew the top collection container from the boiler base. Remove the funnel filter.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash all parts with warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Water Filling: Fill the boiler (bottom part) with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not exceed the safety valve. For faster brewing, especially on induction hobs, you may use pre-heated water, but ensure it is not boiling when added to prevent scalding.
  4. Coffee Filling: Place the funnel filter into the boiler. Fill the filter with finely ground espresso coffee. Do not press or tamp the coffee too firmly, as this can impede water flow.
  5. Assembly: Carefully screw the top collection container onto the boiler base, ensuring a tight seal to prevent steam leakage during brewing.

Operating Instructions

  1. Placement: Place the assembled coffee maker on a suitable heat source (gas or induction hob). Ensure the flame or heat element does not extend beyond the base of the coffee maker.
  2. Heating: Heat the coffee maker on medium heat. The water in the boiler will heat up, creating steam pressure that forces water through the coffee grounds and into the upper collection chamber.
  3. Brewing Observation: Monitor the brewing process. Coffee will begin to emerge from the central column into the upper chamber. The Pulcina's design is intended to interrupt extraction at the optimal moment to prevent a burnt taste.
  4. Completion: Once the coffee flow slows down or stops, remove the coffee maker from the heat source. Do not allow the boiler to run completely dry, as this can damage the unit.
  5. Serving: Carefully pour the freshly brewed espresso into cups. The V-shaped spout is designed to cut the drop cleanly when pouring.

Maintenance

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, allow the coffee maker to cool completely. Disassemble all parts and wash them with warm water. Avoid using abrasive sponges or harsh detergents, which can damage the aluminum finish.
  • Dishwasher Safety: The Alessi Pulcina MDL02/6BFM is dishwasher safe. However, hand washing is recommended to preserve the finish and extend the product's lifespan.
  • Drying: Dry all components thoroughly before reassembling and storing to prevent water spots and corrosion.
  • Gasket and Filter: Periodically check the rubber gasket and filter plate for wear and tear. Replace them if they appear damaged or if you notice steam leakage during brewing.

Troubleshooting

Coffee not brewing or brewing too slowly:
  • Ensure the coffee maker is tightly screwed together.
  • Check that the coffee grounds are not tamped too firmly, which can block water flow.
  • Verify that the heat source is adequate. On induction hobs, brewing may take longer compared to gas. Using pre-heated water in the boiler can significantly speed up the process.
  • Ensure the safety valve is not obstructed.
Water leaking from the side:
  • Confirm the top and bottom sections are securely tightened.
  • Inspect the rubber gasket for damage or improper placement. Replace if necessary.
Burnt taste in coffee:
  • Remove the coffee maker from the heat source immediately after the coffee finishes brewing to prevent overheating the remaining water and grounds.
  • Ensure the heat setting is not too high.
