3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Converting Between Knife and Scraper Modes

The SJ1790 features a folding and lockable mechanism for safe and easy conversion:

  1. To deploy the blade for trimming (knife mode): Unfold the blade mechanism from the handle until it locks securely into the extended position.
  2. To convert to scraper mode: With the blade deployed, rotate the blade mechanism 90 degrees until it locks into the scraper position.
  3. To retract for safe storage: Press the release button (located near the pivot point) and fold the blade back into the body of the tool until it is fully enclosed.

3.2 Trimming and Cutting

When using the tool as a trimming knife:

  • Ensure the blade is extended and securely locked in the knife position.
  • Always use a straight edge or guide for precision cuts.
  • Apply even pressure and cut away from your body to prevent injury.
  • This tool is suitable for trimming light materials such as cardboard, plastic sheeting, and other similar items.

3.4 Safety Precautions

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety gloves and eye protection.
  • Keep fingers clear of the blade at all times, especially during deployment, retraction, and blade changes.
  • Ensure the blade is fully retracted and locked when not in use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use the tool for purposes other than its intended use as a trimming knife or scraper.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

After each use, clean the tool to remove any debris, dust, or residue. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the metal body and handle. For stubborn grime, a slightly damp cloth can be used, ensuring the tool is thoroughly dried afterwards to prevent rust.

4.2 Blade Care

Regularly inspect the blade for dullness, nicks, or damage. A dull blade can be more dangerous than a sharp one as it requires more force and can slip. Replace dull blades promptly using the instructions in Section 2.2. The tool comes with 10 spare blades, and additional replacement blades are available from Spear & Jackson.

4.3 Storage

Store the SJ1790 with the blade fully retracted in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children and pets. The convenient metal carry clip allows for secure attachment to a belt or pocket when in use or for temporary storage.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Blade not locking securely: Check for any debris or obstructions in the blade mechanism. Clean the area thoroughly. Ensure the blade is correctly seated.
  • Difficulty cutting or scraping: The blade may be dull. Replace it with a new, sharp Spear & Jackson blade. Ensure you are applying adequate and consistent pressure.
  • Tool feels stiff: A small amount of light machine oil can be applied to the pivot points if the mechanism feels stiff. Wipe off any excess oil.
