1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the WISCENT WTB-795S Portable Retro Cassette Player Recorder. This device combines classic cassette playback and recording with modern USB playback and recording capabilities, along with an AM/FM/SW radio. Please read this manual carefully before using the product to ensure proper operation and to maximize its lifespan.

2. Safety Information

  • Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture to prevent fire or electric shock.
  • Do not open the casing. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Avoid placing the unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Use only attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
  • Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.

4. Product Overview

Familiarize yourself with the various parts and controls of your WISCENT WTB-795S unit.

4.1 Front Panel Controls

  • Cassette Door: For inserting and removing cassette tapes.
  • Cassette Control Buttons: Play, Stop/Eject, Fast Forward, Rewind, Record.
  • Volume Control: Adjusts the audio output level.
  • Tuning Dial: Selects radio frequencies.
  • Function Selector: Switches between Tape, USB, AM, FM, SW modes.
  • USB Port: For connecting USB flash drives.
  • Built-in Microphone (MIC): For recording audio.

4.2 Rear Panel / Side Panel

  • AC Power Input: Connects the AC power cord.
  • Battery Compartment: Holds 4 x UM2-C 1.5V batteries.
  • Headphone Jack: For connecting headphones (3.5mm).

5. Setup

5.1 Powering the Unit

The WISCENT WTB-795S can be powered by either AC power or batteries.

5.1.1 AC Power Operation

  1. Locate the AC power cord in the battery compartment at the rear of the unit.
  2. Insert the AC power cord into the AC power input jack on the unit.
  3. Plug the other end of the AC power cord into a standard wall outlet (AC 120V/60Hz).

5.1.2 Battery Operation

For portable use, the unit requires 4 x UM2-C 1.5V batteries (not included).

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the rear of the unit.
  2. Insert 4 UM2-C 1.5V batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Note: When operating on AC power, batteries are automatically disconnected. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Cassette Playback

  1. Press the Stop/Eject button to open the cassette door.
  2. Insert a cassette tape with the open edge facing upwards.
  3. Close the cassette door.
  4. Set the Function Selector to 'TAPE'.
  5. Press the Play button to start playback.
  6. Adjust the Volume Control to your desired level.
  7. Use Fast Forward or Rewind buttons to navigate the tape.
  8. Press Stop/Eject to stop playback.

6.2 Cassette Recording

The unit can record from the built-in microphone or from USB to a cassette tape.

6.2.1 Recording from Microphone to Cassette

  1. Insert a blank cassette tape into the cassette compartment.
  2. Set the Function Selector to 'TAPE'.
  3. Press the Record button (usually red) and the Play button simultaneously to begin recording. The built-in microphone will capture audio.
  4. Press Stop/Eject to end recording.

6.2.2 Recording from USB to Cassette

  1. Insert a blank cassette tape into the cassette compartment.
  2. Insert a USB flash drive with audio files into the USB port.
  3. Set the Function Selector to 'USB'.
  4. Start playback of the desired audio file from the USB drive.
  5. While the USB audio is playing, set the Function Selector to 'TAPE'.
  6. Press the Record button and the Play button simultaneously to begin recording the USB audio onto the cassette.
  7. Press Stop/Eject to end recording.

6.3 USB Playback

  1. Insert a USB flash drive containing MP3 audio files into the USB port.
  2. Set the Function Selector to 'USB'.
  3. The unit will automatically detect and begin playing MP3 files from the USB drive.
  4. Use the playback control buttons (Play, Stop, Next/Previous Track) to manage playback.
  5. Adjust the Volume Control as needed.

6.4 USB Recording (from Radio/Cassette/MIC)

  1. Insert a USB flash drive into the USB port.
  2. Select the desired source: 'AM', 'FM', 'SW' for radio, or 'TAPE' for cassette, or ensure the microphone is active for MIC recording.
  3. Start playback on the source (e.g., tune to a radio station, play a cassette).
  4. Press the Record button (often labeled 'REC' or indicated by a red button) to begin recording the audio source directly to the USB drive as an MP3 file.
  5. Press the Stop button to end recording.

6.5 Radio Operation

  1. Extend the telescopic antenna for optimal reception.
  2. Set the Function Selector to 'AM', 'FM', or 'SW' (Shortwave).
  3. Rotate the Tuning Dial to select your desired radio station.
  4. Adjust the Volume Control to your preferred listening level.

6.6 Using Headphones

  1. Plug a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack into the Headphone Jack on the unit.
  2. The built-in speakers will automatically mute when headphones are connected.
  3. Adjust the Volume Control for comfortable listening.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning the Unit

  • Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish.

7.2 Cassette Head Cleaning

Regular cleaning of the cassette heads, pinch roller, and capstan is recommended for optimal sound quality and to prevent tape damage.

  1. Open the cassette door.
  2. Using a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol or a specialized head cleaning fluid, gently clean the playback/record head, erase head, pinch roller, and capstan.
  3. Allow components to dry completely before inserting a tape.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your unit, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
