5. Maintenance
5.1 General Cleaning
- Water Tank: Regularly clean the water tank with mild detergent and rinse thoroughly.
- Drip Tray: Empty and clean the drip tray and grid regularly to prevent overflow and maintain hygiene.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the machine in water.
- Capsule Adapters: Clean the capsule adapters after each use to remove coffee residues.
5.2 Forced Cleaning Mode (Descaling)
After approximately 200 brewing cycles, the KOTLIE EM-308B will automatically enter a forced cleaning (descaling) mode. All lights will flash, and the machine will not operate until the descaling process is completed. This is a crucial maintenance step for the longevity and performance of your coffee machine.

Figure 6: Forced Cleaning Mode instructions.
- Prepare Descaling Solution: Pour citric acid (or a suitable coffee machine descaler) into the water tank, mixed according to the descaler's instructions.
- Position Cup: Place an empty 300ml coffee cup under the coffee spout.
- Start Descaling Cycle: Press the infusion (brewing) button. The program will run through a seven-water level cycle, with the boiler maintaining a temperature of approximately 45°C to start descaling.
- Repeat Rinse: Once the first wash is complete and the machine stops dispensing water, repeat the above steps (without adding more descaler, just using the remaining solution in the tank) for 2 more times. Do not stop the machine or touch any other buttons during this cleaning process.
- Final Rinse: After three complete cycles of descaling, the machine will automatically exit the cleaning program. Empty and rinse the water tank thoroughly, then fill it with fresh water and run 2-3 rinse cycles with clean water to remove any descaler residue.
- Cleaning Complete: The machine will return to preheating mode, indicating that cleaning is complete.
