1. Introduction
The BAOFENG DM-1701A is a dual-band, dual-time slot DMR digital and analog two-way radio. It offers advanced features such as 3000 channel capacity, 5W output power, and compatibility with Tier I & Tier II DMR protocols. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your DM-1701A radio.

2. Included Components

3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation and Charging
- Align the battery with the grooves on the back of the radio.
- Slide the battery upwards until it clicks into place.
- To charge, place the radio with the battery installed into the charging dock. Ensure the charging contacts align.
- Connect the charger adapter to the dock and plug it into a power outlet. The charging indicator will illuminate.

3.2 Antenna Attachment
Screw the desired antenna (High Gain or 771 Antenna) clockwise onto the antenna connector at the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.
3.3 Initial Programming (GD77 Firmware)
The BAOFENG DM-1701A radio is not pre-programmed with GD77 firmware by default. If you require GD77 firmware, please contact the seller for necessary files and guides. Attempting to install incorrect firmware may damage the device.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Power On/Off and Volume Control
- Power On: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click.
- Power Off: Rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
- Volume Adjustment: Rotate the Power/Volume knob to increase (clockwise) or decrease (counter-clockwise) the audio level.
4.2 Digital and Analog Modes
The DM-1701A supports both DMR digital and traditional analog communication modes, allowing for a smooth transition and compatibility with various systems.

4.3 Channel and Frequency Mode
The radio supports both channel mode and frequency mode. In frequency mode, you can manually input frequencies directly on the keypad. Programming software can also be used to set required frequencies without connecting to a computer.
4.4 DMO True2-Slot Dual Time Slot
This feature enables two groups of calls to communicate simultaneously on a single frequency point in direct mode, effectively doubling communication efficiency and conserving frequency resources.
4.5 Digital Signaling Functions
The DM-1701A supports various calling modes compliant with the DMR protocol, including:
- Single Call: Direct communication with a specific radio.
- Group Call: Communication with a predefined group of radios.
- All Call: Broadcast communication to all radios within range.
It also supports remote inhibit functions and other advanced applications for enhanced control and security.
4.6 SMS Function
The radio includes an SMS function, allowing for text editing and sending drafts of up to 64 characters in both Chinese and English. This is useful for communication when voice calls are inconvenient.
4.7 Alarm Function
The DM-1701A supports both general alarm and silent alarm functions for emergency situations.
4.8 Customizable Side Buttons
The side buttons on the radio can be customized to perform frequently used functions, allowing users to maintain their preferred operating habits.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Battery Care
- Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
- Charge the battery in temperatures between 0°C and 40°C (32°F and 104°F).
- Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
5.2 Cleaning
Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the radio's exterior. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents. Ensure the radio is powered off and the battery is removed before cleaning.
5.3 Environmental Conditions
- Operating Temperature: -30°C to +60°C (-22°F to 140°F).
- Water Resistance: This device is Not Water Resistant. Avoid exposure to water or high humidity.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your BAOFENG DM-1701A, please refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Radio not powering on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly installed. Check the Power/Volume knob.
- No audio: Adjust the volume knob. Check if the squelch level is set too high.
- Cannot transmit/receive: Verify the antenna is securely attached. Ensure you are on the correct channel/frequency and that the radio is in the appropriate mode (digital/analog). Check for interference.
- Poor signal quality: Check antenna connection. Move to an open area away from obstructions.
