1. Product Overview

The CHOYONG A8W is a portable smart internet radio receiver designed for global radio access via Wi-Fi or 4G connectivity. It features a compact design, a clear display, and intuitive controls, offering access to over 40,000 internet radio stations, FM radio, and local media playback via TF card.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before using the device. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Do not expose the device to water or excessive moisture.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. Operate and store the device in a dry environment within the recommended temperature range.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, or modify the device. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Use only the provided or approved charging cables and adapters.
  • Keep the device away from heat sources, such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Dispose of batteries and electronic components responsibly according to local regulations.

3. Setup

3.1 Unboxing and Initial Charge

Upon unboxing, verify that all components are present:

  • USB-C Charging Cable
  • USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Adapter
  • Owner's Manual

Before first use, fully charge the device. Connect the provided USB-C charging cable to the radio's Type-C port and plug the other end into a compatible USB power adapter (not included). The charging indicator on the display will show charging status.

3.2 Powering On/Off

To power on the device, press and hold the red power button located on the top right side of the radio. To power off, press and hold the same button. The device may also enter a standby mode by rotating the volume knob until it clicks off.

3.3 Network Connection (Wi-Fi / 4G)

The A8W supports 2.4G Wi-Fi and 4G SIM card connectivity for internet access. E-SIM is also supported, but its use may be limited to North America.

  1. For Wi-Fi: Navigate to the settings menu, select 'Wi-Fi', and choose your desired 2.4G network. Use the rotary knob to select characters and the OK button to confirm when entering the password. Ensure your Wi-Fi network uses WAP2/WAP3 encryption for compatibility.
  2. For 4G: Insert a compatible 4G SIM card into the designated slot. The radio will automatically attempt to connect to the cellular network.

3.4 Software Update (Important)

It is recommended to perform an Over-The-Air (OTA) upgrade after receiving the device to ensure you have the latest software version (current version 4.6 or higher). This process requires a Micro SD (TF) card with a capacity not larger than 32GB.

  1. Insert an empty TF card (max 32GB) into the radio's TF card slot.
  2. Restart the radio and ensure a stable Wi-Fi connection by playing a streaming radio station.
  3. Press the 'Menu' button, select 'Settings', then 'Version info', and follow the on-screen instructions to initiate the update.
  4. Important: Do not press any keys once the upgrade begins. The radio will automatically restart after the upgrade is complete. The entire process typically takes 1-2 minutes.

4. Operating the Device

4.1 Basic Controls

The CHOYONG A8W features a combination of buttons and dual rotary knobs for navigation and control:

  • OK Button: Confirms selections.
  • Menu Button: Accesses the main menu.
  • News Button: Quick access to news stations.
  • Music Button: Quick access to music stations.
  • Heart Button: Saves current station to favorites.
  • Settings Button: Accesses device settings.
  • Voice Search Button: Activates voice command mode.
  • Play/Pause & Skip Buttons: Standard media playback controls.
  • Dual Knobs: One knob for console navigation/selection, the other for tuner/volume control.

4.2 Internet Radio

Access a vast library of over 40,000 internet radio stations worldwide. Stations are categorized by continent, country, province, city, station type, and popularity.

4.2.1 Voice Search

Press the Voice Search button (microphone icon) and speak the name of the station you wish to find. The radio will search its database for matching stations.

4.2.2 Adding Custom Stations

You can add new radio stations by directly entering a valid URL through the radio's interface. The device supports various audio formats, including MP3, AAC, and M3U8.

4.2.3 Saving Favorites

While listening to a station, press the Heart button to bookmark it for quick access later.

4.3 FM Radio

The A8W can receive local FM broadcasts within the 87.5-108MHz range. It supports automatic station scanning and saving.

4.4 TF Card Playback

Insert a Micro SD (TF) card (up to 32GB) containing audio files into the TF card slot. The device will automatically detect and allow playback of your stored music.

4.5 Additional Features

  • Clock: Displays current time and date.
  • Alarm Clock: Set alarms to wake up to your favorite station or a tone.
  • Timer Playback: Schedule the radio to turn on or off at specific times.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To clean the radio, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish.

5.2 Battery Care

The CHOYONG A8W is equipped with a 2000mAh rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery. To maximize battery life:

  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently.
  • Charge the device regularly, especially if it will not be used for an extended period.
  • Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.

5.3 Software Updates

Regularly check for and install software updates as described in Section 3.4. Updates can improve performance, add new features, and resolve potential issues.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your CHOYONG A8W Internet Radio, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
