Setup

  1. Unpack the Boom Pole: Carefully remove the Movo CMP-17C boom pole from its packaging.
  2. Identify Microphone Mounting Point: The boom pole is equipped with a 3/8" and 5/8" threaded stud at the top for microphone attachment.
  3. Attach Microphone: Securely screw your shotgun microphone onto the threaded stud. Ensure it is tightened sufficiently to prevent rotation or detachment during use.
  4. Connect Internal XLR Cable: Plug the integrated XLR cable from the boom pole into your microphone's XLR input.
  5. Extend Pole Sections: To extend the boom pole, twist the locking collars counter-clockwise to loosen each section. Gently pull out the desired section to the required length, then twist the collar clockwise to tighten and secure it. Repeat for all necessary sections.
  6. Connect to Audio Device: Plug the male end of the internal XLR cable (located at the base of the boom pole) into your audio recorder, mixer, or interface.

Operating Instructions

  • Extending and Collapsing: The boom pole features 5 sections. To extend, twist the locking collars counter-clockwise to loosen, pull out the section to the desired length, and then twist clockwise to tighten. To collapse, reverse the process, starting from the top section and ensuring each collar is fully loosened before pushing the section in.
  • Microphone Positioning: Adjust the pole's length and angle to position the microphone optimally for sound capture, ensuring it remains out of the camera frame. The extendable design allows for precise placement.
  • Cable Management: The internal XLR cable provides a clean, tangle-free solution. Ensure the cable is not pinched or twisted when extending or collapsing sections.
  • Handling: Utilize the foam grip handle for comfortable and stable operation. Maintain a balanced grip to prevent arm fatigue, especially when the pole is fully extended.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the aluminum sections with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, dirt, and moisture. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
  • Lubrication: Periodically check the twist locks for smooth operation. If they become stiff, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the threads. Avoid over-lubrication, which can attract dust.
  • Storage: Store the boom pole in its fully collapsed state in a protective case or bag. Keep it in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight, to prevent material degradation.
  • Cable Inspection: Regularly inspect the internal XLR cable and its connectors for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage. If damage is observed, contact support for repair or replacement options.

Troubleshooting

  • Pole Not Collapsing Fully: Ensure all twist locks are fully loosened by turning them counter-clockwise. If the end cap is difficult to remove, gently twist it. The internal cable might be slightly stiff at the end, requiring careful manipulation to allow full collapse.
  • Microphone Not Attaching Securely: Verify that your microphone's thread size (3/8" or 5/8") matches the boom pole's stud. If there is a mismatch, an appropriate thread adapter will be required. Ensure the microphone is screwed on straight and fully tightened.
  • Audio Issues (e.g., static, no signal, intermittent sound):
    • Check all XLR connections at both the microphone and the audio device for secure and proper insertion.
    • Inspect the internal XLR cable for any visible damage, kinks, or pin issues at the connectors.
    • Test the microphone and your external audio device with a different XLR cable to isolate whether the issue lies with the boom pole's internal cable or other equipment.
