2. Key Features

  • 32-bit Float Recording: Utilizes dual Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) for a wide dynamic range, preventing audio clipping and distortion, even with unexpected volume spikes.
  • Dual XLR/TRS Combo Inputs: Equipped with Ultra HDDA Preamps for connecting professional microphones and line-level sources, ensuring high-quality audio capture with an Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) of -127dBu.

3. Setup

3.1. Battery Installation

The FR-AV2 requires three (3) AA batteries for operation. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity as indicated inside the battery compartment. For optimal performance, use high-quality Lithium Metal AA batteries.

3.2. SD Card Installation

The unit supports microSDXC cards up to 512GB. Open the SD card slot cover and gently insert the microSDXC card until it clicks into place. To remove, push the card in slightly until it springs out.

3.3. Connecting Microphones and External Devices

Connect XLR or TRS microphones/line-level sources to the dual combo inputs on the side of the unit. A 3.5mm input is available for connecting cameras or other external devices that require plug-in power.

3.4. Powering On/Off

To power on the unit, press and hold the power button located on the side. To power off, press and hold the same button until the display shuts down.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Basic Recording

  1. Ensure microphones or audio sources are connected and powered.
  2. Press the REC button once to enter record-ready mode. The input levels will be displayed on the screen.
  3. Adjust input gain using the menu or dedicated controls to ensure levels are within an optimal range, avoiding clipping.
  4. Press the REC button again to start recording. The recording time will begin counting.
  5. To stop recording, press the STOP button.

4.2. Monitoring Audio

Connect headphones to the 3.5mm headphone output jack. Use the dedicated volume control to adjust monitoring levels. For wireless monitoring, the optional AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter is required.

4.3. Menu Navigation

Navigate the menu using the directional buttons and the ENTER button. The intuitive interface allows for easy adjustment of settings such as sample rate, recording source, pre-record function, and metadata.

4.4. Timecode Synchronization

The FR-AV2 can generate and read timecode via its 3.5mm IN/OUT ports. This allows for precise synchronization with DSLR cameras and other external timecode devices, simplifying post-production workflows.

4.5. Using as a USB Audio Interface

Connect the FR-AV2 to a computer (Mac/Windows) or iOS device via USB-C. The unit can function as a 2-input, 2-output audio interface, supporting 32-bit float resolution for high-quality audio streaming and recording directly to your device.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

Regularly wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the finish or internal components.

5.2. Firmware Updates

Periodically check the official TASCAM website for firmware updates. Keeping your device's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, new features, and bug fixes. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update carefully.

5.3. Battery Care

Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage. Use fresh, high-quality batteries for reliable operation.

5.4. SD Card Management

Regularly back up your recorded audio files from the microSDXC card to a computer or external storage. Format the SD card periodically within the device's menu to maintain optimal recording performance and prevent data corruption.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Unit does not power on: Check battery installation and charge level. Ensure the power button is pressed and held sufficiently.
  • No audio recording: Verify microphone connections, input gain settings, and ensure the unit is in record-ready mode before pressing REC to start. Check if the SD card is properly inserted and has sufficient free space.
  • Distorted or clipped audio: While 32-bit float minimizes clipping, ensure input levels are not excessively high. Check microphone placement and gain settings.
  • Timecode synchronization issues: Verify cable connections for timecode IN/OUT. Ensure external devices are correctly configured for timecode transmission/reception.
  • Cannot connect to computer via USB: Ensure the unit is powered on and connected with a compatible USB-C cable. Check computer's device manager or sound settings to confirm recognition.
