5. Operating the Lens

5.1. Focus Mode Switch (AF/MF)

Located on the side of the lens barrel, this switch allows you to select between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF).

  • AF (Autofocus): The camera automatically focuses on the subject.
  • MF (Manual Focus): You manually adjust the focus by rotating the focus ring.

5.2. Zoom Ring

Rotate the wide, ribbed zoom ring to change the focal length from 28mm (wide-angle) to 105mm (telephoto). The current focal length is indicated by markings on the lens barrel.

5.3. Aperture Ring and Click Switch

The lens features an aperture ring for direct control over the aperture setting. The 'A' position allows the camera to control the aperture automatically.

  • Rotate the aperture ring to select your desired aperture value (e.g., F2.8, F4, F5.6).
  • The CLICK switch allows you to enable or disable the click stops on the aperture ring. Disabling clicks is useful for smooth aperture transitions during video recording.

5.4. Focus Lock (AFL) Button

The AFL button can be customized via your camera's menu to perform various functions, such as locking focus, activating Eye AF, or other programmable controls. Refer to your camera's instruction manual for customization options.

6. Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your lens.

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical lenses to gently wipe away dust or smudges. For stubborn marks, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Cleaning the Lens Mount: Use a clean, dry cotton swab to gently clean the electrical contacts on the lens mount. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached, preferably in its dedicated case or a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid Impact: Protect the lens from drops or strong impacts, which can damage internal components.
  • Weather Sealing: While the lens features weather sealing, it is not fully waterproof. Avoid prolonged exposure to heavy rain or submersion in water.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, consider the following common solutions:

  • Lens not recognized by camera: Ensure the lens is securely mounted and the electrical contacts on both the lens and camera are clean. Turn the camera off and on again.
  • Autofocus not working: Check if the lens is set to AF mode. Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast for the camera's autofocus system to operate effectively.
  • Image quality issues (e.g., blurriness): Verify that the lens is clean and free from smudges. Check your camera's focus settings and ensure you are using an appropriate shutter speed to prevent camera shake.
  • Lens not zooming smoothly: Ensure no debris is obstructing the zoom mechanism. If the issue persists, contact customer support.

For persistent issues, consult your camera's manual or contact Sigma customer support.
