4.2 Connecting Test Leads

For voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitance, and diode measurements, connect the TL75-4201 test leads:

  • Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (common) input jack.
  • Insert the red test lead into the "VΩ" (voltage/resistance) input jack.

5. Operating Instructions

The Fluke 301D/ESP offers multiple measurement functions, selected via the rotary dial.

5.1 AC/DC Current Measurement (Clamp)

To measure AC or DC current up to 600A:

  1. Turn the rotary dial to the A~ (AC Current) or A= (DC Current) position.
  2. Press the jaw release lever to open the clamp jaw.
  3. Enclose a single conductor with the clamp jaw. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
  4. Read the current value on the display. For DC current, observe the polarity.
  5. For DC current measurements, press the ZERO button to clear any offset before taking a reading.

5.2 Voltage Measurement (AC/DC)

To measure AC or DC voltage:

  1. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  2. Turn the rotary dial to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V= (DC Voltage) position.
  3. Touch the test probes to the points where voltage is to be measured.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display.

5.3 Resistance Measurement

To measure resistance:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary dial to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  4. Touch the test probes across the component or circuit to be measured.
  5. Read the resistance value on the display.

5.4 Continuity Test

To perform a continuity test:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary dial to the Ω (Resistance) position and press the SELECT button until the continuity symbol ()))) appears.
  4. Touch the test probes across the circuit or component.
  5. A continuous beep indicates a complete circuit (continuity).

5.5 Capacitance Measurement

To measure capacitance:

  1. Ensure the capacitor is discharged before measurement.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary dial to the CAP (Capacitance) position.
  4. Touch the test probes across the capacitor terminals.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the display.

5.6 Diode Test

To perform a diode test:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary dial to the Ω (Resistance) position and press the SELECT button until the diode symbol (->|) appears.
  4. Touch the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode.
  5. Read the forward voltage drop on the display. Reverse the probes; the display should show "OL" (open loop) for a good diode.

5.7 Frequency Measurement (Voltage and Current)

To measure frequency:

  1. For voltage frequency, connect test leads and set the dial to V~. Press Hz button.

  • Storage: Store the meter in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods.
  • Test Leads: Inspect test leads regularly for damage (cuts, cracks, frayed insulation). Replace damaged leads immediately.

7. Troubleshooting

If your Fluke 301D/ESP is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues:

  • No Display/Faint Display: Check battery levels and replace if necessary. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
  • Inaccurate Readings:
    • Ensure test leads are fully inserted and not damaged.
    • For current measurements, ensure only a single conductor is within the clamp jaw.
    • For DC current, perform a ZERO adjustment before measurement.
    • Verify the correct function is selected on the rotary dial.
  • "OL" (Overload) Display: The measured value exceeds the meter's range for the selected function. Select a higher range if available, or ensure the measurement is within the meter's specifications.

If problems persist, contact Fluke customer support for assistance.
