4.3 Adding Filter Media
The pump requires filter media (sand or polysphere balls) which is not included. Refer to the pump's specifications for the correct type and amount.
- Unscrew the top flange clamp and remove the multi-port valve.
- Carefully pour the filter media into the tank, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
- Reattach the multi-port valve and secure the top flange clamp.

4.4 Priming the Pump
Before starting, ensure the pump is filled with water to prevent damage from dry running.
- Open the air release valve on the top of the pump.
- Allow water to fill the pump until a steady stream of water flows from the air release valve.
- Close the air release valve. The pump is now primed.
5. Operating Instructions
The Bestway Sand Filter Pump features a 6-position handle on the multi-port valve for various functions:
- Filter: Normal filtering operation. Water flows through the filter media and returns to the pool.
- Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use for maintenance or when the pool is not in use.
- Backwash: Reverses water flow to clean the filter media. Water is discharged through the waste port.
- Rinse: Used after backwashing to flush out remaining dirt from the filter media before returning to filter mode.
- Drain: Drains water directly from the pool through the waste port, bypassing the filter.
- Circulate: Circulates water through the pump and back to the pool, bypassing the filter media. Useful for chemical distribution.
To change functions, always turn off the pump before moving the handle.

5.1 ChemConnect Dispenser
The integrated ChemConnect dispenser helps maintain proper chemical balance by evenly dispersing chlorine tablets into the pool water. Follow the instructions provided with your pool chemicals for correct dosage and placement within the dispenser.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Backwashing the Filter
Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reads 5 PSI (0.34 Bar) above the starting (clean) pressure, or when water flow to the pool is noticeably reduced.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "BACKWASH".
- Turn on the pump and run until the water in the sight glass is clear (approx. 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "RINSE".
- Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "FILTER" for normal operation.
6.2 Cleaning the Pre-Filter Strainer
Regularly check and clean the pre-filter strainer basket to prevent debris from reaching the pump impeller and ensure optimal performance.
- Turn off the pump and close all necessary valves to prevent water flow.
- Unscrew the pre-filter cap and remove the strainer basket.
- Remove any debris from the basket and rinse it thoroughly with water.
- Replace the basket and secure the cap.

6.3 Winterization
Before winter, drain all water from the pump and hoses. Store the pump in a dry, frost-free location. Remove and clean the filter media if necessary.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pump not starting | No power, tripped breaker, motor issue. | Check power connection, reset breaker. If problem persists, contact support. |
| Low water flow | Clogged pre-filter, dirty filter media, air in system. | Clean pre-filter basket, backwash/rinse filter, check for air leaks and prime pump. |
| Cloudy pool water | Insufficient filtration, improper chemical balance. | Run pump longer, backwash filter, test and adjust pool chemicals. |
| Water leaking from connections | Loose clamps, damaged O-rings/gaskets. | Tighten clamps, inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets if damaged. |
