Components Overview
Your AQUASTRONG Sand Filter Pump system includes the following main components:
- Sand Filter Tank (20-inch, 200 lbs sand capacity)
- Pump Motor (1.5 HP, Max 8100 GPH)
- 6-Way Multi-Port Valve
- Pressure Gauge

Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. Follow these steps carefully:
- Placement: Position the pump and filter on a firm, level surface, ideally close to the pool. Ensure adequate drainage and protection from direct weather exposure.
- Secure the Pump: Secure the pump unit onto its base.
- Add Filter Media:
- Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the tank.
- Carefully add the chosen filter media (e.g., filter sand or filter balls) into the tank. The tank has a 200 lbs sand capacity.
- Ensure the standpipe is centered during this process to prevent media from entering it.

Figure 2: Adding filter media to the tank. Ensure the standpipe is correctly positioned.
- Install Multi-Port Valve: Carefully place the 6-way multi-port valve onto the tank, ensuring the standpipe aligns correctly with the valve's opening. Secure the valve with the provided clamp or fasteners.
- Plumbing Connections:
- Connect the pump's output to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve.
- Connect the pool's skimmer line to the pump's intake.
- Connect the pool's return line to the "RETURN" port on the multi-port valve.
- Connect a backwash hose to the "WASTE" port.
- For enhanced durability and flow, consider using rigid PVC piping (1.5-inch) instead of flexible hoses, as shown in advanced setups. Install shut-off valves on both intake and return lines to facilitate maintenance without draining the pool.

Figure 3: Recommended plumbing connections using 1-1/2" PVC hose for in/above ground pools.
- Electrical Connection & Grounding:
- Connect the pump to a grounded 110V outlet.
- Ensure the pump is properly grounded to a grounding rod to prevent electrical hazards. If connecting to a pool heater, ensure both are grounded to the same rod.
- Prime the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is filled with water to prevent dry running.
Operating Instructions
Your AQUASTRONG Sand Filter Pump features a 6-way valve and a programmable timer for efficient operation.
6-Way Valve Functions:
The multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve positions.
- 1. FILTER: Normal filtering mode. Water passes through the filter media, cleaning the pool water.
- 2. BACKWASH: Reverses water flow through the filter to clean the filter media. Directs dirty water to waste.
- 3. RINSE: Used after backwashing to rinse the filter media and settle the sand. Directs water to waste.
- 4. CLOSED: Stops water flow to the filter. Never use while the pump is on.
- 5. WASTE: Bypasses the filter and sends water directly to waste. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
- 6. RECIRCULATE: Circulates pool water without filtering. Useful for mixing chemicals.

Figure 4: The 6-way valve offers multiple functions for comprehensive pool maintenance.
Timer Settings:
The integrated timer allows for customized filtration cycles.
- Step 1: Set Running Hours: Choose from 9 time settings, ranging from 2 to 24 hours.
- Step 2: Turn on the Pump: The time you activate the timer becomes the daily start time for the selected cycle.
- You can select between single or continuous cycles for efficient operation.

Figure 5: The timer control panel allows setting daily running hours for automated filtration.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter pump.
- Backwashing: Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water flow significantly decreases.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the 6-way valve to "BACKWASH".
- Turn on the pump and run until the water in the sight glass (if available) runs clear (approx. 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the 6-way valve to "RINSE".
- Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the 6-way valve back to "FILTER" for normal operation.
- Filter Media Cleaning: If using filter balls, they can be washed at the end of the season for reuse. Sand media typically needs replacement every 3-5 years depending on usage.
- Basket Cleaning: Regularly check and clean the pump's strainer basket to remove debris and ensure unrestricted water flow. Turn off the pump and close any shut-off valves before opening the basket lid.
Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Flow / Poor Filtration | Clogged strainer basket, dirty filter media, air in system, low water level. | Clean strainer basket, backwash/rinse filter, check for air leaks, ensure adequate pool water level. |
| Sand in Pool | Broken laterals in filter tank, incorrect filter media, missing O-ring on standpipe. | Inspect laterals, ensure correct media type and amount, check/install O-ring on standpipe. |
| Pump Not Starting | No power, tripped breaker, motor issue. | Check power supply and breaker, consult a qualified electrician or service technician. |
| Excessive Noise | Air leak in suction line, clogged impeller, worn bearings. | Check for air leaks, clean impeller, contact support for bearing issues. |
