Refer to the diagrams below for proper mounting on ceilings and walls, especially concerning corners and sloped ceilings.

Two diagrams illustrating smoke detector placement. Figure 1 shows optimal ceiling placement (at least 4 inches from walls) and acceptable wall placement (4 to 12 inches from ceiling). Figure 2 shows placement on sloped ceilings, avoiding the apex and ensuring placement within 3 feet of the highest point.

4.3 Installation Steps

  1. Select a suitable mounting location according to the guidelines above.
  2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the screw holes on the ceiling or wall.
  3. Drill holes and insert wall plugs if necessary.
  4. Secure the mounting bracket with the provided screws.
  5. Insert the 9V battery into the smoke detector. Ensure correct polarity. The safety clip feature prevents mounting without the battery installed.
  6. Align the smoke detector with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it locks securely into place.
  7. Test the alarm immediately after installation (refer to Section 5.1).

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Testing the Alarm

It is crucial to test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure it is functioning correctly.

  • Press and hold the 'TEST' button located in the center of the cover for approximately 5 seconds.
  • The alarm will sound loudly, and the red LED will flash rapidly. This indicates the alarm is working.
  • Release the button to stop the alarm.

5.2 Alarm and Warning Signals

  • Smoke Detection: When smoke or combustion particles are detected, the alarm will sound continuously (> 85dB(A) @ 3 meters), and the red LED will flash rapidly. The alarm will continue until the air is cleared.
  • Low Battery Warning: The smoke alarm will emit a 'chirp' sound approximately every 32 seconds, accompanied by a rapid flash of the red LED. This indicates that the 9V battery needs to be replaced immediately.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your smoke detector.

  • Monthly Check: In addition to weekly testing, perform a general check once a month to ensure the alarm is securely mounted and free from visible damage.
  • Cleaning: Clean the smoke alarm every 6 months. Gently vacuum or wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and debris that could obstruct the sensor or vents. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V carbon zinc battery as soon as the low battery warning sounds. To replace, twist the alarm counter-clockwise from its mounting bracket, open the battery compartment, replace the battery, and re-mount.
