4. Setup Instructions

The Reef Octopus OCTO Classic 202-S is designed for in-sump application. Follow these steps for proper installation:

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all components from the packaging and inspect for any damage.
  2. Assemble Skimmer Body: Connect the Aquatrance 3000s pump to the skimmer body according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure all connections are secure.
  3. Install Wedge Valve: Attach the vented wedge valve output to the skimmer. This valve controls the water level within the skimmer body.
  4. Place in Sump: Position the skimmer in your aquarium sump. The recommended sump water height for optimal performance is between 7 and 9 inches. Ensure the skimmer is level.
  5. Connect Power: Once the skimmer is securely in place and the pump is fully submerged, connect the pump's power cord to a GFCI-protected outlet. Do not power on yet.
  6. Install Collection Cup: Place the collection cup firmly onto the skimmer body. Ensure it is seated correctly to prevent leaks.

5. Operating Instructions

After successful setup, follow these steps to operate your protein skimmer:

  1. Power On: Plug in the skimmer pump. The pump will begin drawing water and air, creating foam within the skimmer body.
  2. Adjust Water Level: The Aquatrance 3000s pump produces an ideal mix of water and air. Use the vented wedge valve output to adjust the internal water level.
    • Turn the wedge valve clockwise to raise the internal water level and produce wetter foam (more liquid in the collection cup).
    • Turn the wedge valve counter-clockwise to lower the internal water level and produce drier foam (thicker, darker skimmate).
  3. Initial Break-in: A new skimmer typically requires a break-in period of several days to a few weeks. During this time, foam production may be inconsistent. Avoid making frequent adjustments.
  4. Optimal Foam Production: Aim for foam that rises into the neck of the collection cup and produces a dark, thick skimmate. Adjust the wedge valve gradually, making small changes and observing the results over several hours.

The MarineAndReef Reefractometer is designed for precise salinity measurement in marine aquariums. Follow its specific instructions for calibration and use to monitor your aquarium's salt water parameters.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your protein skimmer. The unit disassembles for easy cleaning.

  • Collection Cup: Empty and clean the collection cup regularly (daily to weekly, depending on skimmate production). Rinse with fresh water to remove accumulated waste.
  • Skimmer Neck: Wipe the inside of the skimmer neck (below the collection cup) to prevent build-up, which can impede foam production.
  • Pump Cleaning: Periodically (monthly or as needed), disconnect the pump and disassemble it for thorough cleaning. Remove any debris, calcium deposits, or algae from the impeller and pump housing. Use a mild acid solution (e.g., vinegar) to dissolve stubborn deposits. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water before reassembly.
  • Skimmer Body: Every few months, or if performance declines, remove the entire skimmer from the sump and clean the skimmer body.
  • Air Intake: Ensure the air intake line and silencer are free from obstructions.

Use the MarineAndReef Aquarium Cleaning Towel for general cleaning tasks around your aquarium. It is a durable, lint-free microfiber towel.
