1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation and proper use of the Ohsilv PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD to Oculink SFF-8611 SFF-8612 Adapter Card. This adapter facilitates the connection of U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 SSDs to a motherboard's PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD slot. Please read this manual carefully before installation to ensure correct setup and optimal performance.
2. Important Compatibility and Usage Notes
Please review these critical points before purchasing or installing:
- This adapter exclusively supports the use of an SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable for connecting U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 solid-state drives. The SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable is NOT included with this product and must be purchased separately.
- Ensure your motherboard features a PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD slot. This adapter is not compatible with standard M.2 NGFF SSD slots that do not support NVMe PCIe. Consult your motherboard's official customer support for specific compatibility details.
- This adapter does not support the use of SFF-8611 to 4 (or SAS) cables for connecting traditional hard drives or SAS drives.
- U.2 SFF-8639 SSDs are distinct from SAS interfaces. Some hard drives with an SFF-8639 interface (e.g., PM1735) are U.3 single-mode only and may not be compatible.
- The signal line from the hard drive connects directly to your machine's PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD slot. This conversion does not involve a chip, ensuring no restrictions on hard drive performance.
- The adapter supports the installation of NVMe M.2 2280 hard drive interfaces. It does not support the installation of M.2 protocol interfaces that are not NVMe.
- This product is compatible with both PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 protocols. For PCIe 4.0 speeds, ensure your machine's M.2 interface, the SSD, and the data cable all support PCIe 4.0. If any component in the chain does not support 4.0, the SSD will operate at the highest supported speed of the slowest component (e.g., PCIe 3.0).
3. Package Contents
- 1 x Ohsilv PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD to Oculink SFF-8611 SFF-8612 Adapter Card
Note: The SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable is not included and must be purchased separately.
4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to install the adapter card and connect your U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 SSD:
- Prepare your System: Power off your computer and disconnect all power cables. Open your computer case to access the motherboard.
- Locate M.2 Slot: Identify an available PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD slot on your motherboard. Refer to your motherboard manual if unsure.
- Install Adapter Card: Gently insert the Ohsilv adapter card into the M.2 slot. Secure it with the screw provided with your motherboard (if applicable).
- Connect SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 Cable: Connect one end of your SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable (purchased separately) to the Oculink SFF-8611/SFF-8612 connector on the adapter card.

Figure 1: Ohsilv Adapter Card with Wire Insertion Direction. The SFF-8611 cable should be inserted from the M.2 connector side of the adapter.
- Connect SSD: Connect the other end of the SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable to your U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 SSD.
- Secure Components: Ensure all connections are firm and secure. Close your computer case.
- Power On: Reconnect power cables and power on your computer. The system should detect the connected SSD.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed, the adapter card functions as a pass-through for the PCIe NVMe signal. The connected U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 SSD will operate as a standard NVMe drive, subject to the performance capabilities of your motherboard's M.2 slot, the SSD itself, and the SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable.
- Driver Installation: Typically, no specific drivers are required for the adapter card itself, as it is a passive component. Standard NVMe drivers provided by your operating system or SSD manufacturer should suffice for the connected SSD.
- BIOS/UEFI Configuration: Ensure your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings are configured to recognize NVMe devices. This usually involves setting the M.2 slot to PCIe mode.
6. Maintenance
The Ohsilv adapter card requires minimal maintenance. Keep the adapter and its connections free from dust and debris to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Avoid exposing the card to extreme temperatures or humidity.
7. Troubleshooting
- SSD Not Detected:
- Verify that your motherboard's M.2 slot is a PCIe NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD slot, not a SATA-only M.2 slot.
- Ensure the SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable is securely connected at both ends (adapter and SSD).
- Check your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings to confirm the M.2 slot is enabled and configured for PCIe.
- Confirm the connected SSD is a U.2/U.3 SFF-8639 NVMe SSD and not a SAS drive or an incompatible U.3 single-mode drive.
- Lower Than Expected Performance:
- Ensure all components (motherboard M.2 slot, SSD, and SFF-8611 to SFF-8639 cable) support the desired PCIe generation (e.g., PCIe 4.0). If any component is PCIe 3.0, the speed will be limited to PCIe 3.0.
- Check for updated motherboard BIOS/UEFI firmware and NVMe drivers for your operating system.
- Physical Damage: If the adapter card appears physically damaged, discontinue use and contact support.
