2. Setup Guide

2.1 Package Contents

Before proceeding, ensure all items are present in your package:

  • Quansheng UVK5 Radio Unit
  • Antenna
  • Battery Pack (4 product-specific batteries included)
  • Charger Base
  • USB Type-C Charging Cable
  • Belt Clip
  • Hand String

2.2 Battery Installation and Charging

  1. Install the Battery: Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it upwards until it clicks into place.
  2. Charge the Battery:
    • Using the Charger Base: Place the radio with the battery installed into the charger base. Ensure the charging contacts align. The indicator light on the charger will show the charging status.
    • Using Type-C Cable: Connect the Type-C cable to the charging port on the side of the radio and plug the other end into a compatible USB power source.

    It is recommended to fully charge the battery before first use.

2.3 Antenna Attachment

Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

2.4 Attaching the Belt Clip and Hand String

Secure the belt clip to the back of the radio using the provided screws. Attach the hand string to the designated loop on the radio for added security.

  • Antenna: For transmitting and receiving signals.
  • Power/Volume Switch: Rotate to turn the radio on/off and adjust volume.
  • Jacklight: Built-in flashlight.
  • PTT Key (Push-to-Talk): Press and hold to transmit, release to receive.
  • Menu (Confirm Key): Enters the menu, confirms selections.
  • Side Key 1: Programmable function key.
  • Side Key 2: Programmable function key.
  • Up Key: Navigates up in menus, increases frequency/channel.
  • Down Key: Navigates down in menus, decreases frequency/channel.
  • Exit Key: Exits menus, cancels operations.
  • Ear/Mic Jack: For connecting external audio accessories.
  • Type-C Charging Port: Alternative charging method.

3.2 Basic Operation

  1. Power On/Off: Rotate the Power/Volume switch clockwise to turn on the radio. Rotate counter-clockwise until it clicks to turn off.
  2. Volume Adjustment: Rotate the Power/Volume switch to adjust the listening volume.
  3. Channel/Frequency Selection: Use the Up/Down keys to navigate through channels or frequencies. The keypad can also be used for direct frequency input.
  4. Transmitting: Press and hold the PTT key to transmit. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT key to receive.

3.3 Advanced Functions

  • NOAA Weather Alert: The radio can receive NOAA emergency weather channels. Refer to the menu for activating this feature to receive weather warnings.
  • AM/FM Aviation Band Receiving: Tune into aviation frequencies to listen to aircraft and air traffic control communications.
  • Flash Copy Frequency (Fast Copy One Channel): This feature allows quick copying of a frequency from another radio. Consult the menu for detailed steps.
  • Cross-Band Intercom: Enables communication between different frequency bands (VHF and UHF). Can be used with a cross-band repeater or directly between radios.
  • Multi-Scan: Detects active frequencies and CTCSS/DCS tones without prior knowledge.
  • Frog Sound Tail Signal: When enabled, the transmitting radio will emit a 'frog sound' beep at the end of transmission, indicating the signal tail.
  • CHIRP Programming: The UVK5 is compatible with CHIRP software for advanced programming via a computer. Select "Quansheng UV-K5" as the radio model in the latest CHIRP version.

4. Maintenance

4.1 General Care

  • Keep the radio clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents.
  • Avoid exposing the radio to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or excessive dust.
  • The radio is Not Water Resistant. Protect it from rain, splashes, and immersion in water.

4.2 Battery Care

  • Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
  • If the radio will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
