4. Setup and Operation
Follow these steps for safe and effective use of the hydraulic knockout punch tool:
- Prepare the Workpiece: Mark the center of the desired hole on the material. Drill a pilot hole large enough to accommodate the draw stud.
- Select Dies and Draw Stud: Choose the appropriate punch and die size for your application. Select a draw stud that matches the thread of the punch and the pilot hole size.
- Assemble the Tool:
- Insert the draw stud through the pilot hole in the workpiece.
- Thread the die onto the draw stud from one side of the workpiece.
- Thread the punch onto the draw stud from the other side, ensuring the cutting edge faces the workpiece.
- Attach the hydraulic driver to the draw stud.
- Punching Operation:
- Close the release valve on the hydraulic driver by turning it clockwise.
- Pump the handle of the hydraulic driver. The punch will slowly advance, cutting a clean hole in the material.
- Continue pumping until the punch passes completely through the material.
- Release and Disassemble:
- Open the release valve by turning it counter-clockwise. The hydraulic pressure will release, and the punch will retract.
- Remove the hydraulic driver, punch, die, and draw stud from the workpiece.

5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your tool:
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the punch, dies, and draw studs to remove any metal shavings or debris.
- Lubrication: Apply a light coat of machine oil to the draw studs and the threads of the dies to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
- Hydraulic Fluid: Periodically check the hydraulic fluid level. If low, refill with appropriate hydraulic oil as per manufacturer recommendations. Refer to the sealing kit for maintenance.
- Storage: Store all components in the provided carrying case in a dry environment to protect them from moisture and damage.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your hydraulic knockout punch tool, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Punching is difficult or incomplete:
- Check if the material thickness exceeds the tool's capacity.
- Ensure the dies and punch are correctly aligned.
- Verify the hydraulic fluid level.
- Hydraulic driver not building pressure:
- Ensure the release valve is fully closed.
- Check for leaks in the hydraulic system.
- Verify hydraulic fluid level.
- Punch or die getting stuck:
- Apply lubricant to the draw stud and die threads.
- Ensure the material is not excessively hard for the chosen die.
