4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

1. Ensure the radio is powered off.
2. Align the Li-ion battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio.
3. Slide the battery pack upwards until it clicks securely into place.
4. To remove, press the battery release latch (usually at the bottom of the battery) and slide the battery downwards.

4.2 Antenna Attachment

1. Locate the antenna connector on the top of the radio.
2. Screw the provided antenna clockwise onto the connector until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

4.3 Charging the Battery

The UV-17 Pro can be charged using the included USB Type-C cable or the charging base.

• Using Type-C Cable: Connect the Type-C cable directly to the radio's Type-C port and to a compatible USB power source (e.g., wall adapter, power bank, computer).
• Using Charging Base: Place the radio into the charging base. Ensure the charging contacts on the radio align with those on the base. The indicator light on the base will show charging status (e.g., red for charging, green for fully charged).

5. Basic Operation

5.1 Power On/Off and Volume Control

• Power On: Rotate the top knob clockwise until you hear a click. The display will light up.
• Power Off: Rotate the top knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
• Volume Adjustment: Once powered on, continue rotating the same knob clockwise to increase volume and counter-clockwise to decrease volume.

5.2 Channel Selection

The UV-17 Pro supports up to 999 channels.

• Using Up/Down Arrows: Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons below the display to cycle through available channels or frequencies.
• Direct Frequency Entry: In VFO (Frequency) mode, use the numeric keypad to directly enter the desired frequency.
• Channel Mode: In Channel mode, use the numeric keypad to enter the channel number.

5.3 Transmitting and Receiving

• Receiving: When a signal is received on the selected frequency/channel, the speaker will output the audio. The display may show an 'RX' indicator.
• Transmitting: To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone (located below the keypad). Release the PTT button to stop transmitting and return to receive mode. The display may show a 'TX' indicator.

6.1 VOX (Voice Operated Exchange)

VOX allows for hands-free transmission. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, without needing to press the PTT button.
