Setup

Ink Filling Instructions

The Hongdian D5X supports two ink filling methods: using the included converter for bottled ink or disposable ink cartridges (not included).

Method 1: Using the Ink Converter (Recommended for Bottled Ink)

  1. Disassemble the Pen: Unscrew the barrel from the grip section to expose the converter. If a cartridge is already present, remove it.
  2. Attach Converter: Firmly push the narrow end of the converter onto the feed nipple of the nib section until it is securely seated.
  3. Submerge Nib: Dip the entire nib and a small portion of the grip section into your bottled fountain pen ink.
  4. Draw Ink: Twist or slide the converter's piston mechanism to draw ink into the converter. Repeat this process a few times to ensure the converter is full and any air bubbles are expelled.
  5. Clean Excess Ink: Carefully wipe any excess ink from the nib and grip section with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  6. Reassemble: Screw the barrel back onto the grip section.

Method 2: Using Ink Cartridges (Not Included)

  1. Disassemble the Pen: Unscrew the barrel from the grip section.
  2. Insert Cartridge: Take a new ink cartridge and firmly push the open end onto the feed nipple of the nib section until you feel it puncture and seat securely.
  3. Wait for Ink Flow: Allow a few moments for the ink to saturate the feed and nib. Gently shaking the pen or lightly touching the nib to a piece of paper can help initiate ink flow.
  4. Reassemble: Screw the barrel back onto the grip section.

Operating the Pen

The Hongdian D5X Fountain Pen is designed for a comfortable and smooth writing experience. Its balanced weight and ergonomic design contribute to effortless writing.

  • Holding the Pen: Hold the pen naturally, allowing the nib to rest at a comfortable angle (typically 40-55 degrees) against the paper. Avoid applying excessive pressure, as fountain pens write best with a light touch.
  • Writing Surface: For optimal performance, use fountain pen friendly paper, which prevents feathering and bleed-through.
  • Capping the Pen: Always cap the pen when not in use to prevent the nib from drying out and to protect it from damage. The D5X features a screw-type cap for secure closure.

Maintenance

Regular cleaning and proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Hongdian D5X Fountain Pen.

Cleaning the Pen

It is recommended to clean your fountain pen:

  • When changing ink colors.
  • If the ink flow becomes inconsistent or stops.
  • Before storing the pen for an extended period.
  1. Disassemble: Remove the cap, unscrew the barrel, and detach the converter or remove the cartridge.
  2. Flush Nib Section: Hold the nib section under cool, running water until the water runs clear. For a more thorough clean, use the converter to repeatedly draw and expel clean water through the nib and feed until no ink residue is visible.
  3. Clean Converter: Flush the converter separately with clean water.
  4. Dry Components: Gently wipe all components with a soft, lint-free cloth. Allow them to air dry completely before reassembling or refilling with ink.

Storage

Store your fountain pen in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Always cap the pen when not in use to prevent the nib from drying out.
