1. Introduction
The HEIMAN Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm is a crucial safety device designed to protect your household from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of various fuels, including natural gas, wood, charcoal, fuel oil, and propane. This alarm reliably detects the presence of CO in the air and alerts you with a loud 85 dB alarm, providing timely warning to ensure your safety.
This manual provides essential information on the installation, operation, and maintenance of your HEIMAN Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Please read it thoroughly before use and keep it for future reference.
2. Safety Warnings
WARNING: This apparatus should be installed by a competent person.
This device is designed to protect individuals from the acute effects of carbon monoxide exposure. It will not fully safeguard individuals with specific medical conditions. If in doubt, consult a medical practitioner.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On and Self-Test
Once batteries are installed, the detector will perform a self-test. The green 'Power' indicator will light up, and the alarm may chirp briefly.
6.2 Normal Operation
During normal operation, the green 'Power' indicator will flash periodically, indicating that the device is functioning correctly.
6.3 Alarm Indication
If carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels, the red 'Alarm' indicator will flash, and the alarm will sound loudly (85 dB). The alarm reaction time varies based on CO concentration:
- 30 PPM: No alarm for 120 minutes.
- 50 PPM: Alarm between 60 and 90 minutes.
- 100 PPM: Alarm between 10 and 40 minutes.
- 300 PPM: Alarm within 3 minutes.

6.4 Interconnectivity Feature
This alarm supports wireless interconnectivity. If one alarm in a linked system detects CO, all connected alarms will sound, providing widespread alert throughout your home.

6.5 Test/Hush Button
Press the 'PUSH TO TEST/HUSH' button to:
- Test the Alarm: In normal mode, pressing this button will activate the alarm sound and light indicators to confirm proper functioning.
- Hush the Alarm: If the alarm is sounding due to a non-emergency situation (e.g., temporary CO presence from a faulty appliance that has been addressed), pressing this button will temporarily silence the alarm. The alarm will reactivate if CO levels remain high.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Regular Testing
It is crucial to test your CO alarm regularly, at least once a month, by pressing the 'PUSH TO TEST/HUSH' button. This ensures the alarm and its indicators are working correctly.
7.2 Battery Replacement
The alarm will provide a low battery warning (a chirp or flash of the yellow 'Fault' indicator) when the batteries need replacement. Replace the batteries immediately with new AA Lithium batteries to ensure continuous protection. The battery compartment is located on the back of the device.
7.3 Cleaning
Clean the alarm regularly to prevent dust buildup, which can affect its performance. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.
7.4 End-of-Life Indication
The CO sensor has a maximum lifespan of 10 years. After this period, the alarm will indicate its end-of-life, and the entire unit must be replaced to ensure continued safety.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm sounds continuously (Red 'Alarm' light flashing) | High CO levels detected | Immediately ventilate the area, evacuate occupants, and call emergency services. Do not re-enter until the area is clear. |
| Alarm chirps periodically (Yellow 'Fault' light flashing) | Low battery or sensor fault | Replace batteries. If the issue persists, the unit may be faulty or at its end-of-life and needs replacement. |
| Alarm does not respond to 'Test' button | No power, faulty unit, or dead batteries | Check battery installation and replace if necessary. If still unresponsive, replace the unit. |
| Alarm sounds intermittently | Fluctuating CO levels or interference | Investigate potential CO sources. Ensure proper ventilation. Relocate the alarm if interference is suspected. |
