2. Safety Information
Always observe safety precautions when using any electrical testing equipment. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the meter or equipment under test.
General Safety Guidelines
- Read and understand all instructions before operating the multimeter.
- Do not use the meter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are damaged.
- Ensure the function switch is in the correct position for the measurement being performed.
- Never apply voltage to the meter when the function switch is set to resistance, diode, or continuity.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Keep fingers behind the finger guards on the test leads during measurements.
- Replace the battery immediately when the low battery indicator appears.
Electrical Safety Warnings

As indicated on the back of the device:
WARNING:
- TO AVOID ELECTRICAL SHOCK, REMOVE INPUTS BEFORE OPENING CASE.
- TO PREVENT FIRE, INSTALL FUSE WITH AMP/VOLT RATINGS SHOWN:
- - F1: F250mA H200V
- - F2: F 10A H200V
Measurement Category Ratings
The Mastech MAS830L is rated for CAT II 600V. This rating indicates the maximum transient overvoltage that the meter can withstand safely. CAT II is for measurements performed on circuits directly connected to the low-voltage installation, such as household appliances, portable tools, and similar equipment.
3. What's in the Box
Upon opening the packaging, please verify that all the following items are included:
- Mastech MAS830L Digital Multimeter
- One pair of Test Leads (Red and Black)
- 2 x LR44 Batteries (pre-installed or included separately)
- User Manual

4. Setup
Battery Installation
The Mastech MAS830L requires 2 x LR44 batteries for operation. If the batteries are not pre-installed, or if the low battery indicator appears, follow these steps:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and no test leads are connected.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery cover.
- Carefully remove the cover.
- Insert the 2 x LR44 batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw.
Connecting Test Leads
To prepare the multimeter for measurements, connect the test leads as follows:
- Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (Common) jack.
- For most voltage, resistance, and diode measurements, insert the red test lead into the "VΩmA" jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the "10A" jack. Ensure the function dial is set to the appropriate current range.
5. Operating Instructions
Power On/Off
To turn the multimeter ON, rotate the central function dial from the "OFF" position to any desired measurement function. To turn the multimeter OFF, rotate the dial back to the "OFF" position.
Function Selection
The large rotary dial allows you to select the desired measurement function and range. Always select a range higher than the expected value to avoid overloading the meter. If the value is unknown, start with the highest range and work downwards until a stable reading is obtained.

Measuring DC Voltage (V-)
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Set the function dial to the desired DC Voltage (V-) range (e.g., 200mV, 2V, 20V, 200V, 600V).
- Connect the test probes across the component or circuit to be measured, observing polarity.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
Measuring AC Voltage (V~)
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Set the function dial to the desired AC Voltage (V~) range (e.g., 200V, 600V).
- Connect the test probes across the component or circuit to be measured. Polarity is not critical for AC voltage.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
Measuring DC Current (A-)
CAUTION: Never connect the meter in parallel with a voltage source when measuring current. This can blow the fuse or damage the meter.
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack.
- For currents up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack. For currents up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the 10A jack.
- Set the function dial to the desired DC Current (A-) range (e.g., 200µA, 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 10A).
- Open the circuit where current is to be measured and connect the meter in series with the circuit.
- Read the current value on the display.
Measuring Resistance (Ω)
CAUTION: Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance. Do not measure resistance on live circuits.
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Set the function dial to the desired Resistance (Ω) range (e.g., 200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2MΩ).
- Connect the test probes across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
Diode Test
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Set the function dial to the Diode symbol (→|→).
- Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes). Reversing the probes should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.
Continuity Test
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Set the function dial to the Continuity symbol (♫).
- Connect the test probes across the circuit or component.
- If the resistance is less than approximately 70 ±30Ω, the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity. The display will also show the resistance value.
Data Hold Function
Press the "HOLD" button (located on the side or front of the meter) to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold function and resume live readings.
6. Maintenance
Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the "Battery Installation" section (Section 4.1). Always use 2 x LR44 batteries.
Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function stops working, the fuse may need to be replaced. Refer to the safety warnings on the back of the meter for the correct fuse specifications (F1: F250mA H200V, F2: F 10A H200V). To replace the fuse, you will need to open the meter's casing, which should only be done by qualified personnel after disconnecting all test leads and power.
Cleaning and Storage
To clean the meter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Store the meter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
Common Issues
- No Display or Faint Display: Check battery level. Replace batteries if low. Ensure the function dial is not in the "OFF" position.
- Incorrect Readings: Verify that the test leads are correctly inserted into the appropriate jacks for the measurement type. Ensure the function dial is set to the correct measurement function and range. Check if the circuit is live when measuring resistance or continuity.
- No Current Measurement: The fuse for the current range may be blown. Refer to the "Fuse Replacement" section.
- "OL" (Overload) Display: The measured value exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range. For resistance, it may indicate an open circuit.
