Power Stop SC5477 Front and Rear Brake Kit User Manual

Model: SC5477

Product Overview

This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Power Stop SC5477 Front and Rear Brake Kit. This kit is designed to upgrade the braking performance for Mitsubishi Outlander models from 2007-2013, offering a complete solution with semi-coated brake rotors, ceramic brake pads, and necessary hardware.

The Z17 Evolution Plus pads feature a low-dust formula and multi-layer rubberized shims for quiet braking. The rotors are silver epoxy coated for corrosion resistance and manufactured to original equipment specifications for smooth, quiet performance.

Safety Information

Always ensure safety precautions are followed when working on vehicle braking systems. Professional installation is recommended. If performing installation yourself, ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and gloves.

  • Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Ensure all components are clean and free of grease or oil before installation.
  • Follow vehicle manufacturer's torque specifications for all fasteners.
  • Properly dispose of old brake components and fluids.

Setup and Installation

This section outlines the general steps for installing the Power Stop SC5477 brake kit. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific procedures and torque specifications.

Required Tools:

  • Jack and Jack Stands
  • Lug Wrench
  • Socket Set and Ratchet
  • Torque Wrench
  • Brake Cleaner
  • Wire Brush
  • C-Clamp or Brake Caliper Piston Tool
  • High-Temperature Brake Lubricant (included)

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and loosen the lug nuts on the wheels to be serviced. Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands. Remove the wheels.
  2. Remove Old Components: Remove the brake caliper bolts and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; support it with a wire or hook. Remove the old brake pads and the brake caliper bracket. Remove the old brake rotor.
  3. Clean Hub Surface: Thoroughly clean the wheel hub mounting surface with a wire brush to remove any rust or debris. This ensures the new rotor sits flush.
  4. Install New Rotor: Place the new Power Stop semi-coated rotor onto the wheel hub. Ensure it sits flat against the hub.
  5. Install New Pads and Hardware: Install the new stainless-steel hardware clips into the caliper bracket. Apply a thin layer of the included high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the back of the new ceramic brake pads where they contact the caliper pistons and caliper bracket. Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  6. Compress Caliper Piston: Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to slowly compress the caliper piston(s) back into the caliper body. This creates space for the thicker new pads.
  7. Reinstall Caliper: Slide the caliper assembly over the new pads and rotor. Reinstall and torque the caliper bolts to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
  8. Bleed Brakes (if necessary): If brake lines were opened or air entered the system, bleed the brake system according to your vehicle's service manual.
  9. Reinstall Wheels: Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications in a star pattern.

Operating and Break-in Procedure

After installing new brake components, a proper break-in procedure is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. This process, often called "bedding-in," transfers a thin layer of pad material onto the rotor surface, ensuring consistent braking and reducing noise.

Break-in Steps:

  1. Find a safe area with minimal traffic.
  2. Accelerate to 35 mph (56 km/h).
  3. Apply moderate braking pressure to slow down to 5 mph (8 km/h). Do not come to a complete stop.
  4. Repeat this process 5-6 times.
  5. Allow the brakes to cool down for at least 15 minutes by driving normally without heavy braking.
  6. Avoid hard braking or emergency stops for the first 200 miles (320 km) after installation.

This procedure helps to properly seat the pads and rotors, preventing issues like glazing and premature wear.

Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance of your braking system are essential for safety and performance.

  • Regular Inspection: Inspect brake pads and rotors for wear at least every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or annually, whichever comes first. Look for uneven wear, cracks, or deep grooves on the rotors.
  • Brake Fluid: Check brake fluid level and condition regularly. Consult your vehicle's manual for recommended brake fluid flush intervals.
  • Cleanliness: Keep wheels and brake components clean to prevent dust buildup, which can affect performance and appearance. The ceramic pads are designed for low dust.
  • Noise Monitoring: Pay attention to any unusual noises (squealing, grinding) during braking. These can indicate wear or other issues requiring attention.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseSolution
Squealing Noise:Improper break-in, worn pads, lack of lubricant on shims, foreign object.Perform break-in procedure. Check pad wear. Ensure shims are properly lubricated. Inspect for debris.
Grinding Noise:Severely worn pads (metal-on-metal), foreign object lodged in caliper.Immediately inspect and replace worn pads. Remove any foreign objects.
Vibration/Pulsation during Braking:Rotor runout (warping), uneven pad wear, improper lug nut torque.Check rotor runout. Re-torque lug nuts. Ensure proper break-in. Professional inspection may be required.
Soft Brake Pedal:Air in the brake lines, low brake fluid, faulty master cylinder.Bleed the brake system. Check brake fluid level. Consult a professional if problem persists.

If you encounter persistent issues, it is recommended to consult a certified automotive technician.
