5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On and Initial Calibration

  1. Press and hold the Power button to turn on the device.
  2. Allow the device to warm up and perform its automatic zeroing process in a clean, leak-free environment. This ensures accurate readings.

5.2 Operating Modes

The D-TEK Stratus offers two distinct operating modes for efficient leak detection:

INFICON D-TEK Stratus Cloud Hunting and Pinpoint Modes

Image: This graphic illustrates the two primary operating modes of the INFICON D-TEK Stratus. The top section shows "Cloud Hunting Mode" with a digital display indicating 1345 ppm, used for finding areas of highest concentration. The bottom section shows "Pinpoint Mode" with a color-coded bar graph, used for precisely locating the leak source.

5.2.1 Cloud Hunting Mode

  • Use this mode to quickly scan large areas and identify the general vicinity of a refrigerant leak.
  • The display will show refrigerant concentration in parts per million (ppm).
  • Move the probe slowly through the suspected area. Higher readings indicate proximity to a leak.

5.2.2 Pinpoint Mode

  • Once the general leak area is identified using Cloud Hunting, switch to Pinpoint mode for precise leak location.
  • In this mode, the device provides a more focused indication, often with a visual bar graph or escalating audio tone, to guide you directly to the leak source.
  • Move the probe very slowly and methodically around suspected leak points.

5.3 Adjusting Sensitivity and Zeroing

  • Sensitivity: Press the SENS/ZERO button to cycle through sensitivity levels. Adjust sensitivity based on the size of the suspected leak and environmental conditions.
  • Manual Zero: If the device is alarming in a clean environment, move the probe to an area free of refrigerants and press and hold the SENS/ZERO button to perform a manual zero.

6. Sensor Information

The D-TEK Stratus utilizes an advanced infrared sensor for detecting a wide range of refrigerants. The sensor has an expected lifespan of over 2,000 hours.

6.1 Compatible Refrigerants

The standard infrared sensor detects:

  • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons)
  • HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons)
  • HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons)
  • HFOs (Hydrofluoroolefins)
  • A2Ls (Mildly Flammable Refrigerants)

6.2 Optional Sensors

For detecting other gases, optional sensors are available and can be easily interchanged:

Image: This image displays three different sensor modules for the INFICON D-TEK Stratus. The red sensor is for CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs, and A2Ls (included refrigerant sensor). The silver sensor is for flammable refrigerants (requires optional sensor). The green sensor is for CO2 (requires optional sensor). This illustrates the device's versatility with interchangeable sensors.

  • CO2 Sensor: Required for detecting Carbon Dioxide.
  • Flammable Refrigerants Sensor: Required for detecting flammable refrigerants.

7. Battery Information

The D-TEK Stratus is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, providing approximately 9 hours of continuous operation on a full charge. The battery is designed for quick charging.

7.1 Charging

Use only the INFICON-supplied AC wall charger or DC car charger. Connect the charger to the micro USB port on the device. The battery indicator on the display will show the charging status.

7.2 Battery Replacement

The Lithium-Ion battery is field replaceable. Refer to the maintenance section for instructions on how to safely replace the battery.

8. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your D-TEK Stratus.

8.1 Filter Replacement

The probe tip contains a filter that prevents contaminants from entering the sensor. Replace the filter regularly, especially if operating in dusty or dirty environments, or if you notice a decrease in sensitivity. Spare filters are included with your unit.

  1. Gently unscrew the probe tip.
  2. Remove the old filter.
  3. Insert a new filter.
  4. Screw the probe tip back on securely.

8.2 Sensor Replacement

The infrared sensor is field replaceable. When the sensor reaches the end of its lifespan (indicated by a message on the display or persistent inaccurate readings), it should be replaced.

  1. Ensure the device is powered off.
  2. Locate the eject button (refer to Device Overview).
  3. Press the eject button to release the sensor module.
  4. Carefully remove the old sensor.
  5. Insert the new sensor module, ensuring it clicks into place.
  6. Power on the device and allow it to calibrate with the new sensor.

8.3 Cleaning

Wipe the exterior of the device with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the probe tip and sensor area remain clean and free of obstructions.

9. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your D-TEK Stratus, consider the following common solutions:

  • Device Not Powering On:
    • Ensure the battery is fully charged.
    • Check if the battery is correctly installed.
  • Inaccurate Readings or Constant Alarm:
    • Perform a manual zero in a clean air environment.
    • Check and replace the probe tip filter if it is dirty or clogged.
    • Verify the sensor is correctly installed and not at the end of its lifespan.
    • Ensure the correct sensor type is installed for the refrigerant being detected.
  • No Detection:
    • Increase the sensitivity setting.
    • Ensure the probe is moved slowly and methodically.
    • Check the sensor for proper installation and remaining lifespan.
    • Confirm the presence of refrigerant; test with a known leak source if possible.
  • Short Battery Life:
    • Ensure the battery is fully charged before use.
    • Consider replacing the battery if it no longer holds a charge effectively.

For persistent issues, contact INFICON customer support.
