2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions when using the torque wrench:

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, when operating tools.
  • Ensure the workpiece is securely fastened before applying torque.
  • Do not use the torque wrench as a breaker bar or for loosening fasteners. It is designed for tightening only.
  • Avoid dropping the torque wrench, as this can affect its calibration and accuracy.
  • Keep the torque wrench clean and free from grease or oil to maintain a secure grip.
  • Store the torque wrench at its lowest torque setting to relieve spring tension and maintain calibration accuracy over time.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

3. Product Overview

3.1. Components

The EPAuto 3/8-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench consists of the following main components:

  • Ratchet Head: Made from hardened treated Chrome Vanadium steel alloy (Cr-V) for durability. Features a reversible mechanism for tightening.
  • Main Scale: Displays torque values in foot-pounds (ft-lb) and Newton-meters (Nm).
  • Micrometer Scale: Used for fine adjustments of the torque setting.
  • Knurled Handle: Provides a non-slip grip during operation.
  • Lock Nut: Secures the torque setting to prevent accidental changes.
  • Drive Adapters: Includes 3/8'' to 1/4'' drive adapter and 3/8'' to 1/2'' drive adapter for versatility.
  • Extension Bar: A 3/8'' drive extension bar is included for reaching recessed fasteners.
  • Storage Case: A sturdy plastic storage case is included for protection and easy transport.

3.2. Key Features

  • Durable Construction: Ratchet head made from hardened treated Chrome Vanadium steel alloy (Cr-V).
  • Easy Storage: Comes with a sturdy plastic storage case.
  • Non-Slip Grip: Features a knurled handle for secure handling.
  • Easy to Read Scale: High contrast dual range scale for clear readings in ft-lb and Nm.
  • Accurate: Pre-calibrated to +/- 4% accuracy.
  • Audible Click: Provides a distinct "click" sound and feel when the preset torque value is reached.
  • Included Accessories: 3/8'' to 1/4'' drive adapter, 3/8'' to 1/2'' drive adapter, and 3/8'' drive extension bar.

4. Setup

Before first use, or after extended storage, cycle the wrench several times at a low torque setting to lubricate the internal mechanism.

4.1. Setting the Torque Value

  1. Unlock the Handle: Rotate the lock nut at the base of the handle counter-clockwise to unlock it.
  2. Set Main Torque: Rotate the knurled handle until the top edge of the handle aligns with the desired major torque value on the main scale (e.g., 50 ft-lb).
  3. Set Fine Torque: Continue rotating the handle until the zero mark on the micrometer scale aligns with the vertical line of the main scale. Then, rotate the handle further until the desired fine adjustment value on the micrometer scale aligns with the vertical line (e.g., for 55 ft-lb, set main to 50, then rotate until 5 on micrometer scale aligns).
  4. Lock the Handle: Rotate the lock nut clockwise until it is tight to secure the set torque value.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to correctly use your torque wrench:

  1. Attach Socket: Select the correct size socket for your fastener and attach it firmly to the 3/8-inch drive square on the wrench head. Use the included adapters if necessary.
  2. Set Direction: Adjust the lever on the ratchet head to the desired direction for tightening (clockwise for most fasteners).
  3. Position Wrench: Place the socket onto the fastener, ensuring it is fully engaged.
  4. Apply Force: Apply smooth, steady, and increasing force to the handle. Do not jerk or apply sudden force. Pull the wrench from the handle, not the head.
  5. Listen for Click: Continue applying force until you hear and feel a distinct "click" from the wrench. This indicates that the preset torque value has been reached.
  6. Stop Applying Force: Immediately stop applying force once the click is heard/felt. Do not continue to tighten the fastener beyond the click.
  7. Remove Wrench: Remove the wrench from the fastener.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your torque wrench:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the wrench clean with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Do not use solvents or immerse the wrench in liquids.
  • Storage: Always return the torque wrench to its lowest torque setting (10 ft-lb / 13.6 Nm) before storing it in its protective case. This relieves tension on the internal spring and helps maintain calibration. Store in a dry, clean environment.
  • Calibration: Torque wrenches are precision instruments and should be periodically checked for calibration by a qualified service center, especially after heavy use or if dropped.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your torque wrench, consider the following:

  • Wrench does not click:
    • Ensure the torque setting is above the minimum value.
    • Verify the lock nut is fully tightened after setting the torque.
    • Apply smooth, steady force. Jerking motions may prevent a clear click.
    • If the wrench has been stored for a long time, cycle it several times at a low setting to re-lubricate.
  • Difficulty adjusting torque setting:
    • Ensure the lock nut is fully loosened.
    • Clean any debris or grime from the adjustment mechanism.
  • Inaccurate readings:
    • Ensure the wrench is used correctly, applying force only to the handle.
    • Check if the wrench has been dropped or subjected to impact.
    • Consider professional re-calibration if accuracy is critical and issues persist.
