Product Components
The TX 850 metal detector consists of several key components designed for effective and comfortable use.

Figure 1: TX 850 Component Overview. This image illustrates the main parts of the metal detector: the adjustable stem for length customization, the pinpoint searching mode button for accurate target location, the ergonomically designed handle for comfortable grip, the waterproof search coil for underwater detection, and the detector stand to prevent damage when resting the device.

Figure 2: TX 850 Dimensions. This image provides the key dimensions of the metal detector, showing its adjustable height range from 42.1 inches (107 cm) to 51.2 inches (130 cm), the compact size of the control box (5.1 inches or 13 cm), and the 11-inch (28 cm) DD search coil.
Setup
1. Assembly
- Attach the Search Coil: Connect the 11-inch DD search coil to the lower stem. Ensure the coil cable is securely wrapped around the stem to prevent tangling and false signals.
- Connect the Stems: Insert the lower stem into the middle stem, and then connect the middle stem to the upper stem, which holds the control box and handle. Adjust the length of the stem to a comfortable height using the adjustment clamps.
- Secure the Control Box: Ensure the control box is firmly attached to the upper stem.
- Connect the Coil Cable: Plug the search coil cable into the corresponding port on the control box. Tighten the connector to ensure a secure, waterproof seal for the coil.
2. Battery Installation
The TX 850 requires one 9V battery (not included). Locate the battery compartment on the control box, open it, and insert the 9V battery, observing the correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
To power on the detector, rotate the POWER knob clockwise. To power off, rotate it counter-clockwise until it clicks.

Figure 3: Control Panel and LCD Display. This image highlights the detector's control panel, including the POWER/GAIN knob, THRESHOLD/ALL METAL/DISC MODE knob, GROUND BALANCE buttons, and the LCD screen displaying target ID, depth, and battery status.
2. Controls and Display
- POWER/GAIN: Controls the power and adjusts the detector's sensitivity. Higher gain increases detection depth but can also increase noise.
- THRESHOLD/ALL METAL/DISC MODE: Adjusts the audio threshold in All Metal mode and selects between different discrimination modes.
- GROUND BALANCE: Used to manually or automatically balance the detector to the ground conditions, reducing false signals from mineralized soil.
- DISC LEVEL: Adjusts the level of discrimination to ignore unwanted metals.
- PINPOINT: A button (often labeled GG or PINPOINT) used to precisely locate the target after a detection.
- LCD Display: Provides visual information such as target ID (numerical value), target depth, battery status, and current operating mode settings.
3. Operating Modes
The TX 850 offers multiple operating modes for various detection scenarios:

Figure 4: Operating Modes. This image details the five operational modes: All Metal Mode for detecting all metal types, Disc/Notch Mode for discriminating specific targets, Memory Mode to recall previous settings, Jewelry Mode for ignoring iron, and Pinpointer Mode for accurate target location.
- All Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal. This mode offers the greatest depth and sensitivity.
- Disc/Notch Mode: Allows you to discriminate against unwanted metals (e.g., iron) or notch out specific target IDs. Adjust the DISC LEVEL to set the rejection threshold.
- Memory Mode: Remembers the last mode selected, allowing for quick recall of preferred settings.
- Jewelry Mode: Optimized for finding jewelry, typically by ignoring iron and other common trash metals.
- Pinpointer Mode: Used after a target has been detected to precisely locate its position before digging. Press and hold the PINPOINT button and slowly move the coil over the target area.
4. Ground Balance
Ground balancing is crucial for stable operation, especially in mineralized soil. The TX 850 features ground balance capabilities from ferrite to saltwater conditions. Refer to the specific instructions in your full manual for automatic and manual ground balance procedures.
5. Search Techniques
- Sweeping: Hold the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping arcs.
- Target Response: When a target is detected, the detector will emit an audio tone and display a target ID on the LCD.
- Pinpointing: Once a target is indicated, use the Pinpointer Mode to narrow down its exact location.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe down the detector with a damp cloth after each use. The search coil is waterproof and can be rinsed with fresh water, but the control box is not waterproof and should be kept dry.
- Battery Care: Remove the 9V battery if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Check if the 9V battery is correctly installed and fully charged. Replace if necessary.
- Erratic Signals/False Alarms:
- Ensure the search coil cable is tightly wound around the stem and securely connected to the control box.
- Perform a ground balance procedure for the current soil conditions.
- Reduce the GAIN (sensitivity) setting.
- Check for nearby sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., power lines, other electronic devices).
- Poor Detection Depth:
- Increase the GAIN (sensitivity) setting.
- Ensure the detector is properly ground balanced.
- Check battery level; low battery can affect performance.
