2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Unboxing and Initial Preparation
- Carefully remove the smoke detector and all components from the packaging.
- Locate the user guide and review it before beginning the installation process.
- Mark the current date on the alarm's label to track its 10-year lifespan. The replacement date should be 10 years from the installation date.
2.2 Battery Activation
Your Kidde 10SDR smoke detector is powered by two (2) AA alkaline batteries (included). These batteries are designed to last for the entire 10-year lifespan of the alarm, but should be replaced at least once a year or when the low battery chirp sounds.
- Ensure the battery door is closed.
- Pull out the yellow tab to activate the backup batteries. You should hear a beep to confirm activation. If no beep is heard, remove and reinstall the batteries.

2.3 Mounting Location
For optimal protection, install smoke detectors in every sleeping room and on every level of your home, including the basement. Place the alarm on the ceiling or high on a wall, away from corners and obstructions. Avoid placing within 6 feet of cooking appliances to minimize nuisance alarms.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Normal Operation
During normal operation, the green LED light will blink every 60 seconds to indicate the alarm is functioning correctly. The 10SDR model features enhanced sensing technology to reduce false alarms, particularly those caused by cooking.

3.2 Alarm Condition
When smoke is detected, the alarm will sound three long beeps, repeating, and the red LED light will blink in time with the alarm. The alarm produces a loud 85-decibel sound to ensure occupants are alerted.

3.3 Test & Hush Button
The large central button on the alarm serves as both a Test and Hush button:
- Test: Press and hold the button to test the alarm's functionality. The alarm will sound if working correctly.
- Hush: In case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking), press the button to temporarily silence the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. The alarm will automatically reset after this period.
3.4 Self-Testing Feature
The alarm includes an internal self-testing system that continuously monitors its components to ensure proper operation. This is not a substitute for manual testing. Perform a manual button test once per week to verify alarm operation.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Weekly Testing
It is recommended to test your smoke alarm weekly by pressing the Test/Hush button. This verifies the alarm's electronic circuitry, horn, and battery are functioning.
4.2 Battery Replacement
The included AA batteries should be replaced at least once a year. The alarm will chirp once every 60 seconds when the batteries are low. Replace both AA batteries with new AA alkaline batteries immediately upon hearing this chirp.
4.3 Cleaning Your Alarm
Clean your smoke alarm at least once a month to remove dust and debris. Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to clean the vents. Do not paint the alarm.
4.4 Dust Cover for Renovations
If performing construction, renovations, or painting, use the proprietary dust cover (if included) to protect the alarm from dust and debris. Ensure the dust cover is removed at least 24 hours after construction is complete, as the alarm will not operate with the cover installed.

5. Troubleshooting
- Alarm Chirps Every 60 Seconds: Indicates low battery. Replace both AA batteries immediately.
- Alarm Sounds Continuously Without Smoke: This could be a nuisance alarm. Press the Test/Hush button to silence it temporarily. If it persists, clean the alarm as per maintenance instructions.
- Alarm Does Not Sound During Test: Ensure batteries are correctly installed and activated. If the issue persists, the alarm may need replacement.
- End-of-Life Notification: The alarm will beep to remind you it's time to replace it at the end of its 10-year lifespan. Refer to the installation date marked on the alarm.
