5. Operating Instructions

This section guides you through the process of making espresso and frothing milk.

5.1. Grinding Coffee Beans

The integrated conical burr grinder offers 30 adjustable grinding sizes for optimal extraction.

  1. Add Beans: Pour fresh whole coffee beans into the bean hopper.
  2. Select Grind Size: Rotate the grind size selector to choose your desired fineness. Finer grinds (lower numbers) are for slower extraction and stronger espresso, while coarser grinds (higher numbers) are for faster extraction. A setting between 8-9 is often recommended for espresso.
  3. Grind: Place the portafilter under the grinder chute. Press the 'GRIND' button or activate the grinding mechanism (refer to specific model controls). The machine supports hand-free grinding.

5.2. Brewing Espresso

The machine features a 20-bar professional pump and double PID temperature control for optimal extraction.

  1. Pre-heat: Turn on the machine. Allow it to pre-heat for at least 30 seconds (ThermoJet technology) until the indicator lights signal readiness. Pre-heating cups on the cup warming tray is recommended.
  2. Dose & Tamp: Fill the single (0.49-0.56 oz) or double (0.7-0.78 oz) filter cup with freshly ground coffee. Tamp the coffee firmly and evenly to the 'Max' line using the provided tamper. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim.
  3. Insert Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the group head and twist firmly to lock it into place.
  4. Place Cup: Place your espresso cup(s) under the portafilter spouts.
  5. Brew: Select 'SINGLE' or 'DOUBLE' shot button. The machine will automatically brew the programmed amount of espresso. For manual control, refer to the manual-shot mode (up to 13.5 oz).

5.3. Milk Frothing

The adjustable stainless steel steam wand creates rich microfoam for lattes and cappuccinos.

  1. Prepare Milk: Fill the milk jug with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy). Do not fill more than halfway.
  2. Activate Steam: Turn the knob to the steam setting. Wait for the steam indicator light to illuminate, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
  3. Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam valve to purge any condensed water from the wand. Close the valve.
  4. Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam valve fully. Angle the jug to create a swirling motion. As the milk expands, lower the jug slightly to keep the tip just below the surface.
  5. Stop Steaming: Once the milk has reached the desired temperature and texture, close the steam valve and remove the jug.
  6. Clean Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly purge the wand again to clear any internal milk.

The top surface of the machine acts as a cup warming tray, helping to preserve the temperature and aroma of your espresso.

  • Place your espresso cups or mugs on the designated warming area on top of the machine.
  • Allow cups to warm while the machine pre-heats for optimal results.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and longevity of your Garvee Espresso Machine.

6.1. Daily Cleaning

  • Drip Tray: Empty and clean the removable drip tray daily. The tray has a water level indicator that floats up when full.
  • Portafilter & Filter Baskets: After each use, remove spent coffee grounds and rinse the portafilter and filter baskets under hot water.
  • Steam Wand: As mentioned in the operation section, wipe the steam wand immediately after each use and purge it to prevent milk residue buildup. The removable frothing nozzle simplifies cleaning.
  • Group Head: Wipe the group head with a damp cloth to remove any coffee grounds.

6.2. Weekly Cleaning

  • Water Tank: Empty and clean the water tank with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Grinder: Periodically clean the grinder burrs using the provided cleaning brush. Refer to the manual for specific instructions on accessing the burrs if necessary.

6.3. Descaling

Depending on water hardness, descaling should be performed every 2-3 months to prevent mineral buildup. Use a commercial descaling solution designed for coffee machines and follow the product's instructions. Refer to the full product manual for detailed descaling procedures.
