1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Saris Bones EX Car Trunk Bicycle Rack Carrier. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or use the product. Retain this manual for future reference.

The Saris Bones EX is designed to transport up to three bicycles securely on the trunk of compatible vehicles. Its unique design accommodates a wide range of vehicles, including those with spoilers.

2. Safety Information

  • Always ensure the rack is securely attached to the vehicle before loading bicycles.
  • Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of 105 pounds (35 pounds per bike).
  • Verify that all straps and bike hold-downs are tightened before and during transit.
  • Check local regulations regarding bicycle rack usage and visibility of license plates/taillights.
  • Avoid driving over rough terrain or at excessive speeds with bikes loaded.
  • Periodically inspect the rack for wear, damage, or loose components.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all the following components are included in your package:

  • Saris Bones EX Trunk Rack (main unit)

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the Saris Bones EX on your vehicle's trunk or hatch.

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Clean the areas of your vehicle where the rack will make contact to prevent paint damage.
  2. Position the Rack: Place the Saris Bones EX rack on the trunk or hatch of your vehicle. The unique "dog leg" design is intended to fit over most spoilers.
  3. Attach Protect-O-Pads: Apply the Protect-O-Pads to the rack's feet and any other contact points with the vehicle to cushion and protect the paint.
  4. Secure Top Straps: Attach the top straps to the upper edge of the trunk/hatch. For vehicles with glass or composite hatch edges, use the provided Hatch Huggers by inserting them into the gap and attaching the straps to them.
  5. Secure Side Straps: Attach the side straps to the side edges of the trunk/hatch.
  6. Secure Bottom Straps: Attach the bottom straps to the lower edge of the trunk/hatch.
  7. Tighten All Straps: Systematically tighten all six straps (two top, two side, two bottom) until the rack is firmly secured to the vehicle and does not move. Ensure even tension.
  8. Final Check: Gently shake the rack to confirm it is stable and securely mounted. Re-tighten straps if any movement is detected.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the rack is securely installed, follow these steps to load your bicycles:

  1. Prepare Bikes: Remove any loose items from your bicycles (e.g., water bottles, pumps, bags).
  2. Load First Bike: Lift the first bicycle and place its top tube into the cradles on the rack. The arc-based design helps separate bikes.
  3. Secure Bike Frame: Use the premium bike hold-downs to firmly secure the bicycle frame to the rack. Ensure the bike is stable and does not sway.
  4. Secure Wheels: Use the provided Wheel Straps to secure the front and rear wheels of the bicycle, preventing them from spinning or moving during transit.
  5. Load Additional Bikes: Repeat steps 2-4 for the remaining bicycles, ensuring proper spacing and security for each. The rack can carry up to three bikes.
  6. Final Check: Before driving, gently shake each bike and the entire rack to confirm everything is secure. Re-tighten any loose straps or hold-downs.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Saris Bones EX rack.

  • Cleaning: Clean the rack periodically with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage plastic or rubber components.
  • Inspection: Before each use, inspect all straps, buckles, and bike hold-downs for signs of wear, fraying, or damage. Check the rack's frame for cracks or bends.
  • Lubrication: The pivot points of the rack do not typically require lubrication, but ensure they move freely.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the rack in a dry, protected area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures to prevent material degradation.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Saris Bones EX rack.

  • Rack is not stable on the vehicle:
    • Ensure all six straps are correctly attached and tightened evenly.
    • Verify that the rack's feet are making firm contact with the vehicle surface.
    • Check vehicle compatibility. While the Bones EX fits many vehicles, some specific models may require alternative solutions.
  • Bikes are swaying or not secure:
    • Confirm that the bike hold-downs are fully engaged and tightened around the bike frames.
    • Ensure Wheel Straps are used and tightened to prevent wheel movement.
    • Adjust bike positioning on the cradles for better balance and stability.
  • Paint damage on vehicle:
    • Ensure Protect-O-Pads are correctly placed at all contact points.
    • Always clean vehicle surfaces before installation to remove dirt or grit that could scratch paint.
    • Avoid over-tightening straps, which can cause excessive pressure.
