6. Operating Modes and Functions
The Kolibri KBR-500 offers several modes and functions to meet various money counting needs.
6.1 Counting Modes
- MIX Mode: Counts mixed denominations and provides a total value. This mode automatically identifies and calculates the value of different banknotes in a single stack.
- SORT Mode: Counts and sorts bills by a single denomination. The machine will stop and alert if a different denomination is detected, allowing for sorting.
- COUNT Mode: Counts only the number of bills, regardless of denomination. This mode is useful for simple piece counting.
6.2 Additional Functions
- ADD Function: Keeps a running total of counted bills across multiple batches.
- BATCH Function: Allows processing bills in customized amounts. The machine will stop once the preset batch quantity is reached.
- CUR (Currency) Button: Selects the desired currency for counting (USD, CAD, MXN, GBP, EUR).

7. Counterfeit Detection
The KBR-500 incorporates multiple advanced detection methods to ensure the authenticity of banknotes.

Figure 7.1: Advanced Counterfeit Detection Methods. This diagram visually explains the nine different detection technologies used by the KBR-500 to identify counterfeit currency, including magnetic, infrared, ultraviolet, and physical characteristic checks.
Detection Technologies:
- Magnetic Ink (MG): Detects magnetic properties in the ink of genuine banknotes.
- Infrared Transmission (IR): Analyzes the infrared properties of banknotes, revealing security features not visible to the naked eye.
- Ultraviolet Paper Brightness (UV): Checks for UV features and the absence of optical brighteners in genuine currency paper.
- Magnetic Thread (MT): Detects the magnetic security thread embedded in banknotes.
- Banknote Size (SIZE): Measures the dimensions of the bills to ensure they match standard specifications.
- Half-Notes (HLF): Detects bills that are torn or cut in half.
- Double Notes (DBL): Identifies when two or more bills are stuck together and fed as one.
- Chain Notes (CHN): Detects bills that are linked together end-to-end.
If a suspicious bill is detected, the machine will stop, display an error code, and the bill will typically be diverted to the reject pocket.
8. Basic Operation
- Power On: Turn on the machine using the power switch.
- Select Currency: Press the 'CUR' button to cycle through and select the desired currency (e.g., USD).
- Select Mode: Press the 'MODE' button to choose your desired counting mode (MIX, SORT, or COUNT).
- Prepare Bills: Straighten and fan out the bills to ensure they are not folded, wrinkled, or stuck together.
- Load Bills: Place the stack of bills neatly into the hopper. The machine will typically start counting automatically. If not, press the 'START' button.
- Read Results: The display will show the count and total value (in MIX mode).
- Remove Bills: Once counting is complete, remove the bills from the stacker.
9. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and accuracy of your KBR-500.
9.1 Cleaning Procedures
- Power Off and Unplug: Always turn off and unplug the machine before cleaning.
- Dust Removal: Use the provided cleaning brush or a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris from the hopper, stacker, and internal sensors.
- Sensor Cleaning: Gently wipe the optical sensors (located inside the bill path) with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry completely before use.
- Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Note: Avoid spraying cleaning solutions directly onto the machine.
10. Troubleshooting
Refer to this section for common issues and their solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine does not power on. | Power cord not connected; power switch off; no power from outlet. | Check power cord connection; ensure power switch is ON; test outlet with another device. |
| Bills jam frequently. | Bills are wrinkled, folded, or stuck together; sensors are dirty; bill guides are misaligned. | Straighten bills before loading; clean sensors (refer to Maintenance); adjust bill guides if applicable. |
| Counterfeit detection errors (false positives). | Sensors are dirty; worn or damaged bills; incorrect currency selected. | Clean sensors thoroughly; remove excessively worn bills; ensure correct currency is selected. |
| Inaccurate counting. | Sensors are dirty; bills are not loaded properly; machine speed setting is too high for bill quality. | Clean sensors; ensure bills are neatly stacked in the hopper; try a lower counting speed setting. |
