Always observe general safety regulations when operating the scythe mower. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read and understand all instructions before operating the machine.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, sturdy footwear, and long trousers.
  • Never operate the machine under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
  • Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, at a safe distance from the working area.
  • Inspect the work area for objects that could be thrown by the blades (stones, branches, etc.) and remove them.
  • Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Do not smoke while refueling.
  • Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning correctly before starting.
  • Exercise extreme caution when operating on slopes. Mow across the face of slopes, not up and down.

3. Setup and Assembly

The Scheppach BMS196-88 requires some assembly before first use. Follow these steps carefully.

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Check for any damage during transit and ensure all parts are present according to the packing list.

3.2 Handlebar Assembly

Attach the handlebar to the main unit. Ensure all bolts are securely tightened. The handlebar is adjustable in 3 heights for ergonomic working.

3.3 Wheel Installation

Install the large wheels with off-road profile. This step may require patience due to tight clearances. Ensure wheels are securely fastened for optimal traction.

3.4 Initial Fluid Checks

  • Engine Oil: Check the engine oil level and fill with recommended oil if necessary.
  • Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with unleaded petrol. Refer to the engine manual for specific fuel requirements.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Starting the Engine

The mower is equipped with a pull starter. Follow the engine manufacturer's instructions for starting, typically involving setting the choke, engaging the throttle, and pulling the starter cord firmly.

4.2 Adjusting Cutting Height

The cutting height can be adjusted from 30 mm to 60 mm. Adjust the height according to the grass type and desired finish. For very high grass, it is recommended to make multiple passes, gradually lowering the cutting height.

4.3 Mowing Techniques

The scythe mower is ideal for difficult terrain and high grass. Maintain a steady pace of 2.52 km/h for optimal cutting. The 88 cm cutting width allows for rapid progress.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your scythe mower.

5.1 Cleaning

After each use, clean the cutting bar and the underside of the machine to remove grass clippings and debris. This prevents corrosion and maintains cutting efficiency. Use a brush or compressed air; avoid using high-pressure water directly on the engine or electrical components.

5.2 Blade Care

Inspect the cutting blades regularly for sharpness and damage. Dull or damaged blades can lead to poor cutting performance and increased strain on the engine. Sharpen or replace blades as needed. Always wear heavy-duty gloves when handling blades.

5.3 Engine Maintenance

Refer to the engine manual for detailed maintenance schedules. This typically includes:

  • Checking and changing engine oil.
  • Cleaning or replacing the air filter.
  • Inspecting and cleaning the spark plug.
  • Checking the fuel filter.
