Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Ortlieb Back-Roller Plus Pannier. Please read these instructions carefully before first use to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your product.
Safety Instructions
- Ensure the pannier is securely attached to your bicycle rack before riding. Loose panniers can interfere with bicycle operation and cause accidents.
- Distribute weight evenly between panniers if using a pair. Uneven loading can affect bicycle balance.
- Do not overload the pannier. Refer to the specifications for maximum capacity.
- Regularly check all mounting components for wear and tear. Replace damaged parts immediately.
- Be aware of the increased width of your bicycle when panniers are attached, especially in narrow passages or when maneuvering.
Package Contents
The Ortlieb Back-Roller Plus Pannier package typically includes:
- 1 x Ortlieb Back-Roller Plus Pannier (23L)
- Mounting hardware (pre-installed QL2.1 system components)
- Shoulder strap
Setup: Attaching the Pannier to Your Bicycle Rack
The Back-Roller Plus features the Ortlieb QL2.1 mounting system for secure and easy attachment to most standard bicycle racks.
- Adjusting the Upper Hooks: The upper hooks can be adjusted horizontally to fit your rack's width. Press the release button on the back of the pannier to slide the hooks along the rail. Position them to align with your rack's top tubes.
- Adjusting Hook Inserts: The QL2.1 system includes inserts for different rack tube diameters (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm). Select the appropriate inserts for a snug fit on your rack. These are typically pre-installed or included separately.
- Adjusting the Lower Hook: The lower hook prevents the pannier from swinging. It can be rotated 360 degrees and adjusted vertically along a rail. Position it to engage with a vertical stay of your rack, ensuring a stable connection.
- Attaching to Rack: Place the upper hooks over the top tubes of your rack. The hooks will automatically close when the pannier is lifted by its handle. Engage the lower hook with a vertical stay.
- Removing from Rack: To remove, simply lift the pannier by its carrying handle. This action opens the upper hooks, allowing the pannier to be detached.

Operating Instructions
Opening and Closing the Pannier
The Back-Roller Plus features a roll-top closure for waterproof sealing.
- To Open: Unclip the side buckles and unroll the top opening.
- To Close (Waterproof Seal): Roll the top edge down at least 3-4 times. Secure the side buckles, either by clipping them to each other over the top of the bag, or by clipping them to the lower compression straps on the sides of the bag. Ensure the closure is tight to maintain waterproof integrity.
Carrying the Pannier
The pannier is equipped with a carrying handle for easy transport off the bike. A detachable shoulder strap is also included for comfortable carrying.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the pannier with water and a mild soap solution. Use a soft brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use harsh detergents or solvents.
- Drying: Allow the pannier to air dry completely before storage, especially after wet conditions, to prevent mildew.
- Storage: Store the pannier in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
- Zippers/Buckles: Keep zippers and buckles clean and free of dirt. Lubricate plastic buckles if they become stiff.
Troubleshooting
- Pannier not waterproof: Ensure the roll-top closure is rolled down at least 3-4 times and the buckles are securely fastened. Check for any punctures or damage to the fabric.
- Pannier feels loose on rack: Verify that the correct hook inserts are used for your rack tube diameter. Adjust the upper hooks for a snug fit and ensure the lower hook is properly engaged with a vertical stay.
- Difficulty attaching/detaching: Check for obstructions in the QL2.1 mechanism. Ensure the carrying handle is fully lifted when detaching.
