2. Setup
2.1 Initial Charging
Your GW9500-1A4 watch is equipped with Tough Solar power. Before initial use, expose the watch face to bright light for several hours to ensure a sufficient charge. The charge level indicator (L, M, H) on the display shows the current battery status. Aim for a 'H' (High) charge level for optimal performance.
2.2 Time Setting (Atomic Timekeeping)
The watch automatically receives time calibration signals (Multi-Band 6) to maintain accurate time. Ensure the watch is exposed to an open area, away from sources of interference, for successful signal reception. Manual time adjustment is also possible if automatic reception is not available.
- In Timekeeping Mode, press and hold the ADJUST button until the city code starts flashing.
- Use the COMP and ALTI buttons to select your home city code.
- Press the MODE button to cycle through settings (DST, 12/24H format, seconds, hour, minute, year, month, day).
- Use the COMP and ALTI buttons to change the flashing value.
- Press ADJUST to exit settings.
3. Operating the Watch
3.1 Mode Navigation
Press the MODE button to cycle through the watch's various functions:
- Timekeeping Mode
- Altimeter Mode
- Barometer/Thermometer Mode
- Digital Compass Mode
- World Time Mode
- Stopwatch Mode
- Timer Mode
- Alarm Mode
3.2 Altimeter Function
The altimeter measures relative altitude based on atmospheric pressure. Changes in weather can affect readings.
- From Timekeeping Mode, press the ALTI button to enter Altimeter Mode.
- The watch will display the current altitude.
- To calibrate, press and hold ADJUST while in Altimeter Mode, then use COMP and ALTI to set a known altitude.

Image 3.1: The watch display in Altimeter mode. The screen shows an altitude graph and a large digital reading for altitude, along with the current time and other indicators.
3.3 Digital Compass Function
The digital compass indicates magnetic north. For accurate readings, ensure the watch is held level and away from strong magnetic fields.
- From Timekeeping Mode, press the COMP button to enter Digital Compass Mode.
- The display will show a direction indicator (e.g., N, NE, E) and a degree value.
- To calibrate, perform a bidirectional calibration by rotating the watch horizontally twice, following the on-screen prompts.

Image 3.2: The watch display in Compass mode. The screen shows a directional indicator (e.g., WNW) and a large digital reading for degrees, along with the current time and other indicators.
3.4 Barometer/Thermometer Function
The barometer measures atmospheric pressure, which can be used to predict weather changes. The thermometer measures ambient temperature.
- From Timekeeping Mode, press the BARO button to enter Barometer/Thermometer Mode.
- The display will show atmospheric pressure and temperature readings.
- Note that temperature readings are affected by body heat if the watch is worn on the wrist. For accurate ambient temperature, remove the watch for 20-30 minutes.
3.5 Illumination (Super Illuminator)
Press the top right button (often labeled LIGHT or indicated by a lightbulb icon) to activate the Super Illuminator LED backlight for visibility in low-light conditions. Auto Light can be enabled in settings to illuminate the display when the watch is tilted towards your face.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning helps maintain the watch's appearance and functionality, especially its mud resistance.
- Wipe the watch with a soft, dry cloth.
- For dirt or mud, rinse with clean water and use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to gently clean crevices.
- Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Avoid using chemical cleaners or solvents.
4.2 Water Resistance
The GW9500-1A4 is water-resistant to 200 meters (20 BAR). This rating allows for showering, swimming, and recreational scuba diving. Do not operate buttons underwater.
4.3 Tough Solar Charging
To ensure continuous operation, expose the watch to light regularly. Avoid prolonged storage in dark places. The watch has a power-saving function that turns off the display when in darkness to conserve power.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1 Watch Not Charging / Low Charge
If the charge indicator remains at 'M' (Medium) or 'L' (Low) despite exposure to light:
- Ensure the watch face is directly exposed to strong light (e.g., direct sunlight through a window).
- Avoid placing the watch in indirect light or under clothing for extended periods.
- A full charge from 'L' to 'H' can take several hours of direct sunlight.
5.2 Display Difficult to Read
The negative LCD display can appear dark or difficult to read in certain lighting conditions, especially indoors or in low light.
- Activate the Super Illuminator by pressing the light button.
- Adjust the viewing angle.
- Ensure the watch is adequately charged, as low battery can affect display contrast.
5.3 Time Not Syncing
If the watch is not receiving time calibration signals:
- Place the watch near a window at night, facing a direction that allows for better signal reception (typically towards the nearest atomic clock transmitter).
- Avoid placing it near electronic devices that may cause interference.
- Perform a manual receive operation (refer to the detailed Casio module manual for specific steps).
