2. Safety Information

WARNING: Improper installation or maintenance of shock absorbers can lead to serious injury or vehicle damage. Always consult a qualified professional for installation and adhere to all safety guidelines.

  • Please carefully check the Original Equipment (OE) number, year, make, model, trim, and engine of your vehicle to ensure compatibility.
  • To ensure that the shock absorbers are not damaged during transit, they may be shipped in two separate packages. Verify all components are received before beginning installation.
  • All references to brand names and models are for compatibility purposes only and do not imply any affiliation or endorsement by the original manufacturer.
  • Always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and gloves during installation.
  • Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath it. Never rely solely on a jack.

3. Installation Guidelines

SCITOO shock absorbers are designed for direct replacement, featuring identical holes and buckles to OEM specifications for a straightforward installation. However, professional installation is strongly recommended due to the complexity and safety critical nature of suspension components.

3.1 Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify that the shock absorbers match your vehicle's specifications using the compatibility list in Section 1.
  2. Inspect the new shock absorbers for any signs of shipping damage or manufacturing defects.
  3. Gather all necessary tools, including a jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, and spring compressor (if applicable for your specific vehicle's strut assembly, though these are bare shocks).

3.2 Removal of Old Shock Absorbers

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels.
  3. Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it safely on jack stands. Remove the front wheels.
  4. Locate the upper and lower mounting points of the existing shock absorber.
  5. Carefully remove the nuts and bolts securing the shock absorber. You may need to support the lower control arm to relieve tension.
  6. Remove the old shock absorber from the vehicle.

3.3 Installation of New Shock Absorbers

  1. Position the new SCITOO shock absorber into the mounting locations.
  2. Secure the upper mounting point first, then the lower mounting point, using the original hardware or new, compatible hardware.
  3. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque settings. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for exact torque values.
  4. Repeat the process for the other front shock absorber.
  5. Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle.

4. Operating Principles

Shock absorbers are crucial components of your vehicle's suspension system, designed to control the movement of the springs and suspension. They convert kinetic energy from suspension movement into thermal energy, which is then dissipated.

The SCITOO 72546 shock absorbers feature a mono-tube design and a unique piston design, offering greater sensitivity and superior vehicle control. This design helps to:

  • Reduce body sway and vibration.
  • Minimize road harshness transmitted to the passenger cabin.
  • Maintain consistent tire contact with the road surface for improved traction and braking.
  • Enhance overall driving safety and comfort.

5. Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance of your shock absorbers are essential for optimal performance and longevity.

5.1 Inspection Schedule

  • Inspect shock absorbers every 12,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first.
  • Check for signs of oil leakage, which indicates a failing seal.
  • Look for physical damage to the shock body, piston rod, or mounting points.
  • Examine bushings and mounts for wear, cracks, or deterioration.
  • Listen for unusual noises (clunking, rattling) coming from the suspension, especially over bumps.

5.2 Cleaning

Keep the shock absorbers free from excessive dirt, mud, and road salt. A simple rinse with water during regular vehicle washing is usually sufficient. Avoid using high-pressure washers directly on seals.

6. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your vehicle's ride quality or suspension, the shock absorbers may be a contributing factor. Here are some common symptoms and potential causes:

  • Excessive Bouncing or Sway: This is a primary indicator of worn shock absorbers. The vehicle may continue to bounce after hitting a bump or exhibit excessive body roll during turns.
  • Fluid Leaks: Visible oil or fluid leaking from the shock absorber body indicates a failed seal, requiring replacement.
  • Unusual Noises: Clunking, rattling, or knocking sounds from the suspension can indicate loose mounting hardware, worn bushings, or internal shock damage.
  • Uneven Tire Wear: Worn shocks can lead to uneven tire wear patterns, such as cupping or scalloping, due to inconsistent tire contact with the road.
  • Nose Dive During Braking / Squat During Acceleration: A vehicle that dips excessively forward during braking or squats backward during acceleration may have worn front or rear shocks, respectively.

If you observe any of these symptoms, it is recommended to have your vehicle's suspension system inspected by a qualified mechanic.
